Help with kitchen design (tile, backsplash and countertop choice)
We are narrowing down our choice for kitchen and considering Ikea's Laxarby or Kungsbacka kitchen cabinet door. Although these are the narrow choices we might still consider Ikea's Tingsryd door. We know that we want a black kitchen cabinets. See below some of the pictures for more details.
Our layout. Knocking down two walls, one bearing wall to open up the space. So what you see below is not yet like this but we are in process of doing it. Linking dining, kitchen, and living room. Dining and living rooms have golden plank oak hardwood floor and we are planing on installing tiles in the kitchen.

And finally, there is Laxarby style Ikea's doors that we are considering to use.
We are considering white or marble look subway tile as back splash.
For the floor we are thinking some sort of light color, not dark. This is where we need some ideas. Please share pictures if you have black kitchen or if you have an idea what type of tiles would work in combination with black kitchen cabinets.
For the counter top we are considering lighter choice of quartz from Ikea, like Organic White. But we might consider some sort of not so busy light color granite ( I like granite that has more of the veins instead of speckles). Another option we are considering is Ikea's wooden counter top. If you have pictures of black kitchen I would like to see your counter top choices. Whichever quartz or granite option we choose we would like to stay on budget. I do not know yet enough about granite quality and the typical cost but the Organic White quartz is I think $53 per square foot, including installation and sink cut out. So, would like to stay in the ballpark of cost.
Looking forward to seeing your pictures and hearing your opinions.
We are aiming toward contemporary and/or contemporary/transitional style.

7 years agolast modified: 7 years agoI can hear the excitement in your post, and I'm happy for you. I love the idea of the IKEA black cabinets, white counters, and marble backsplash. Do you have inspiration images of other black kitchens you've liked? I ask because they can be very helpful in making decisions about counter materials.
One thing about black kitchens I've noticed for myself is that for some reason I don't like black upper cabinets - tall pantries are fine, but I don't like those little black boxes hanging out of nowhere (see below). If I hadn't flipped through some images I wouldn't have realized that. Go image shopping - it'll help, I promise.

Comments (6)whatever you do choose, remove the wood transition piece and have the butt the tile to the wood, separate w/tile edging. Schluter makes them in different colors. I did one between my two tiles (yes it will work w/the wood if they are the same heights) another cool idea is to piece in the wood w/the tile. you could do a porcelain hex tile in whites/grays I hope you're including an under the sink trash pull out bin. that guy in the entryway needs a new home! backsplash comes last. find your flooring and countertops first. have you gone to a stone yard to find out what you prefer? Colors? quartz or granite? narrow it down to what you like. coordinate the counter and the tile floor. look at porcelain tiles or perhaps slate. you could do a nice herringbone layout in this small space to give it some detail. this black slate is beautiful w/white and next to your reddish floors. it's easy to care for too. I've had slate for years. you have such a small space, look into pre fab countertops. they have them in marble quartz or granite and average 500 bucks for a 9'x22" countertop. you have a fabricator cut them to your kitchen . this is a pre fab marble,, or you could do a granite. all the pre fabs are against the back wall and behind the marble piece. something like this, with the slate floor, your SS and white cabs would look really nice....See MoreHELP/Advice with Countertop/backsplash choice for newbie
Comments (2)Start with undermount lights, as wiring might have to go behind the backsplash. I think the 3rd tile on the black sample board goes well with the countertop next to it. And combines nicely with the blue. The swirls/pattern on the photo below is too large and would clash with the woodgrain (in my opinion). Comments (7)I just finished a budget friendly kitchen update (No backsplash as of yet). I had very similar oak cabinets that I purchase new door fronts and drawer fronts, removed the cabinet above the stove, and added a pantry hutch style cabinet. I painted all the frames and doors/drawers myself, husband installed all the doors, hardwares, and new cabinets. It turned out awesome and IMO (doesnt look like a do it yourself project) and neighbors, friends, and family agree (maybe biased IDK). SO depending on your budget, there is nothing wrong with using your existing cabinets if they are in good condition and the layout is functional. My kitchen does not appear to be as large as yours, however, with new cabinet doors/fronts, hardware, new 6' long by 70" height pantry hutch, sink, faucet, quartz counters I spent just shy of $9,000. My doors/fronts and new cabinets were from a custom cabinet maker, which by the way, was less then stock cabinets of similar style at a box store. This is not my dream kitchen, but the kitchen that fit in the existing space in a nice home that I plan on selling and custom building in the next 4 to 5 yrs. Comments (7)Now, from your question, I assumed you are talking about the backsplash. For the countertop, I guess it would help if you could look at it laying on the floor or a counter height and what you want to draw attention to. If your piece has a strong angular line like the one in your post, will it "point" to something you want to emphasize? Will it draw your eye towards something interesting? That's what I would ask. Definitely do as Jan suggests and ask if the piece for the counter will be cut up . Can you make a transparent paper cut out of your current countertop shape, cut in pieces or whole, so you can lay it, or them, over the whole piece in your appointment so you can see for yourself?...See More

6 years agoEnduring, yes that is how it is marked at Ikea, black/brown. We were at Ikea two days ago and you can barely see any brown tones which I like for I like black cabinets. They do have white option in Europe. Bronx and golden tones can beautifully pair with Laxarby. We will probably go with silver/gray tones (hardware, countertop if we go with quartz or granite).
