January 2021 Week 2
Comments (56)Nancy, our washer might be the same model as yours. It was the cheapest Whirlpool they had. It was $499. It is even less fancy than the one we purchased 10 years ago....and that one wasn't top-of-the line or anything like that. With this one, it is hard to get used to no time count-down. I don't know how many minutes are left and that isn't a huge deal, but something I had gotten used to. And you just put your soap in the tub of the washer. Our last one had a dispenser (similar to the bleach dispenser). I don't mind putting it in the basin, but I wish it would let me fill it up with water before adding the clothing. But, so far so good with it. I will admit the champagne set is very pretty. It's very mild colored and lovely. But, when I do upgrade (hopefully not for a long time), I'll just get white. Even our "stainless steel" kitchen appliances that are supposed to be smudge proof, still get smudged. We did our grocery shopping this morning. Geez! All of you who are doing grocery "pick up", well, they're not picking up the items from storage...they're going through the stores with these big cart things with large tubs on them. There's multiple ones always in the way...blocking the aisles and shelves. They are doing a good job picking out your items. They carefully inspect each item before putting it in your tub. Those of us standing around waiting just have to be very patient. LOL I might have to start shopping at Crest, though. haha. We start at Natural Grocer, go to Sprouts and then finish at Walmart. We might start finishing at Crest. Nancy, I would be happy to take a few guajillo seeds. You know what's funny, until I made the posole I had never heard of that pepper. It's an interesting dish for sure. Instead of tomatoes, you make a pepper sauce/paste (for those of you who are unfamiliar with the dish). Very interesting about the pee/poop thing. The boys like to pee outside, so I guess I'll just direct them to the garden. And, Amy, that's good to know about medications. I'm dumping the chicken droppings behind the shop, but will probably stop in February so it can break down a bit before I put the roselle and melons there. If I ever get a grandchild, I'll have an excuse to get bunnies to be "their" pets...and that will be great for fertilizing. Maybe a pony too! (I'm joking...no one lecture me, please haha) Danny, how exciting! Pretty! Jen, I still have seed cups and trays if you're interested. Our plan is to clean and organize the shop on Monday, so I can get them to you once I find them all. I'm not sure how I ended up with so many. Maybe HU brought plants over in them. Amy, you have a lot of experience with lettuce and greens. Have you found that red lettuces do better in cold weather? It seems so...at least in my hinged hoop right now. This is the first year I've been able to overwinter lettuce and the reds are looking the best. The reds and the blushing ones....See MoreFebruary 2021 Week 1
Comments (61)I am a little nervous about the forecast. I've never cared for so many animals in weather like this, that lasts for so long. Tom did a DIY chicken waterer warmer today. Hopefully that will work well. We pulled the torn frost cloth off the hinged hoop and added plastic today. Lettuce is in that bed. I covered the other beds with frost cloth while Rick worked on the hoop house door yesterday. I am considering placing plastic over the artichoke. Artichoke is a surprise for me. I thought it thrived in the heat, but it seems to prefer wet and cool. The dogs will be miserable stuck inside. And I'm sad for my neighbors' pets that live outdoors. Rick bought a couple of 50lb bags of potatoes (one is a red and the other a white potato, I think) at Ellison's, Rebecca, but Norman is a little far for you to drive. I'm not sure what their mask policy is. Will probably start more broccoli tomorrow, as well as some flowers....and a few tomatoes for Dawn. I haven't decided yet which tomatoes to start. It will just be a 4 or 5 cups. Kim, I would take some fig cuttings if you're sharing at the Fling. Out of the 36 cabbage and 36 broccoli pellets, about 24 each look good. Lowes has broccoli and other plants out. My leek order is placed. I ordered more black bean seeds because we only have 5 jars left. Need to focus more on the beans this year and less focus on the peas. SESE was out of black beans. Vermont has the small packages, but not the large ones available. A woman at Walmart breezed by me today. Her cart was completely loaded with canning supplies including jars. I mean, overflowing with supplies. Also, food saver things. She must have grabbed all the lids because both the regular and wide mouth were gone. I wish I didn't feel so unsettled about the weather....See MoreMarch 2021 Week 5/ April week 1
Comments (71)Lynn, you know... I grew up C of C too. As did Rick (HU). I still attend one...and am actually employed by one. It's not accepted by other C of C really because we're not so...C of C'ish. The one I am at is very, very near where you live. (I remember you telling me your general area.) I had a similar experience growing up. Sort of. My parents and people near me were NOT so hardcore with the "we don't know the true date of Christ's birth and it is wrong to celebrate it on a date that is not in the scripture." Of course you're familiar with the whole "speak where the Bible speaks, be silent where the Bible is silent" thing they had going back then. Some still do. My family celebrated these holidays as mostly a fun, family time. However, our C of C celebrates it all now. (I could ramble on about this, but won't. SO much to say.) Rick (HU) is like you. He left that behind a long time ago. I think the difference is my family (and people near me) weren't so strict. Y'all's people were. And that will make thinking people run far away. And...to prove the point that I'm not strict C of C, I'm enjoying a glass of wine RIGHT now. And coming up with an Easter lesson for my littles tomorrow morning. Sorry. That had nothing to do with gardening. I was just checking in....but had to chime in. I'm late to post on the Saturday night, so it's doubtful Lynn will even see this before the next week's thread will be created....See MoreJuly 2021 Week 1
Comments (64)Just realized I've been absent this week. We still can't have in person camp, so this year we're doing a hybrid. Every Saturday in July we're having an in person gathering at a different area, and those who can't meet in person can join us through Zoom. Today was our gathering in OKC, so I've been busy trying to finish up everything for that. It went well, not a great turnout but the kids so enjoyed seeing their friends in person. The next 3 weeks I'll be helping with the Zoom portion so I won't have quite as much to prep. Pits...The media have hype pits to be killing machines much like they did rottweilers back in the 90s, or dobermans in the 80s. We have a pit mix and he's the absolute sweetest dog. He even got pinned by another dog at the park & didn't do a thing to stop it. And our most recent addition is a pit mix (client couldn't keep him & asked us to take him, and, well, now we have another dog lol.) And we have gobs of pit mix clients, plus a few full blood pits. 99% of them have been teddy bears. But a couple weeks ago we had 2 full pits, both rescues, and one attacked the other. Had to be the most frightening thing to watch, I thought the one was going to kill the other. And before all this they were complete angels, very loving. The biggest issue with pits is how they're raised. Any dog can be vicious, but pits get a bad rep because of how much damage they can do. But honestly, I'll take a pit over a chihuahua or terrier any day. HJ, you know I'll always take any containers lol. I'm hoping that when we move I can set up a more effective seed shelf. Speaking of, we went & looked at a place yesterday. The property was almost perfect, but the house was a little too cramped for our liking and it was in Lexington. Much as I'd love to have 10 acres, that was pretty much kill our dog sitting. Nancy, I'm afraid that pepper doesn't look familiar to me. But all the varieties I'm growing this year are new to me, so I'm not much help. Off to look at y'alls native lists. If we're moving, I'm going to have a lot of work starting my garden again. And I'm wanting to include at least half natives, half all the other stuff I like....See MoreNancy RW (zone 7)
