Designing Baement layout
Comments (14)Thanks for those sketches. I know the drawing is deceiving (the first one), but there isn't a ton of room between stairwell landing and wall- there wouldn't be enough of a passageway to put closets in there, but the rest of it may work. I'm not sure about the storage in the back That wall can't be changed as it is the outside wall (and those two windows are actually underneath our deck) so no additional storage can be added there- again my sketch is deceiving. there is a bump out where the bedroom would be b/c in our kitchen where the eat in area is, there is a bump put. The contractor who built our house is also doing our basement so he knows the exact shape of the house which is most likely why he didn't specify more clearly about that. I will definitely let you know what we decide on tomorrow morning. I tall depends on how costly it would be to open the window in the utitliy room to make it larger if we decide to switch things around. Thanks so much for your help!!!...See MoreYour preference - Closet off Bedroom or Bath?
Comments (23)I've been watching your other thread (even though I've had no real feedback), and was SURE that my answer to this question was bedroom.... till I read all the other answers. The main reason I picked bedroom: the moisture. Problem is, I've never had a large bathroom like the one you're designing. Mine have always been on the small side, current one is itty-bitty (and on my grand list to enlarge in the future). The moisture in there is high, and having a closet open up to that is inconceivable. However, like I said, the size of the bathroom may have some affect on that. Most of the built up moisture in there is due to the shower and since your shower is so far from the closet, it might be ok. In fact, my closet door is only about 6 feet from my bathroom door (which is about four feet from the shower door), with an open space in between and I've never had any moisture problems in the closet. Setting aside the moisture issue, I like all the reasons given above for having it in the bathroom. It would be luxurious not to have to enter the bedroom after showering in order to get to the closet. It probably would not be a deal breaker for me either way. Here's an idea. If you have some free time, go have a look at some of the high end homes currently on the market. We do those zillion-dollar home tours occasionally and thinking back, IIRC, the vast majority of the closets are accessed from the bathroom....See MoreHelp - Bedroom Furniture Placement
Comments (9)Thank you call for your comments! I do appreciate them. We've had the bed in between those 2 narrow windows for the longest time now. We really just wanted to a change. It also made watching the TV a bit more difficult with the TV on the side wall like that. Those were our two main reason for wanting to move things around. But you make a good point, Cheryl - about walking all the way around the bed. I moved the furniture we currently have around to see how it would feel and I do not like having to navigate all the way around like that. Suzmtl, the wall of windows faces our covered back desk. Unfortunately, even though it's a west facing window, the covered back deck doesn't let much natural light shine though. And those narrow windows the opposite side of the room don't let much natural light in either. When my children were infants, I appreciated the little dark cocoon feel, but now - not so much :) Also, I tried moving the furniture around that way you suggest - with the bed on that opposite wall and my husband didn't like it. So scratch that. I guess I'm back to the original layout, though I'm still uncertain how the TV is going to play out. Maybe I'll move the smaller/long media table from my son's room into he bedroom in front of the windows instead?? Would this look ok? (Btw, the main entry door doesn't look just like that, but it was the best I could to show the layout)....See Moreneed help with furniture placement in my awkward shaped bedroom!
Comments (3)Have you tried the bed on the facing wall? (I always like to see the headboard when walking into a room.) Wouldn't the vanity make sense in front of the window to take advantage of daylight? (Or does it have too large a mirror above it?) Then you can place the dresser on the diagonal wall and the Vittsjo shelves and standing mirror near the door. If the standing mirror just doesn't work anywhere, consider selling it and using a wall-mounted one on your entry or closet door. Alternatively, with the bed on the opposite wall, you could place the dresser where the bed is now (at the foot of the bed, iow) and the vanity where the dresser is now. Do you really need the glass shelves in the bedroom? Could they go anywhere else in your place? The unit won't look strange by itself if you consider the whole wall as a vignette and place art on it accordingly....See MoreKW PNW Z8
