Chosing fabric for slipcover
Comments (11)LOL, Trust me, there are millions of upholstery fabrics out there. You just need to go to a decorating fabric store to get upholstery fabric:) The only way you are going to find upholstery grade fabric on line is if you know exactly the brand and collection you want. Then you contact a place like www.eadeswallpaper.com (who would have guessed they sold fabric!) and you get a qoute and order if you like the price. There are hundreds of mills that sell hundreds of designs, so you need the product information. For instance, I just ordered Kravets (brand), Allure Velvet (collection) 14743 (style number) 135 (color code). Upholstery grade fabric is determined by many elements: the ply and twist of the thread, the weight of the thread, the weave of the fabric, the dye, the finish and any decorative embellishments. You can take a finished upholstery grade fabric, embroider all over it and make in totally unsuitable for upholstery. You could find a med. weight fabric that feels like upholstery grade, but the weave may be inappropriate. Likewise, some silk dupioni, which is a light weight fabric, can be used on upholsterybut you have to apply a knit backing to it first. Other heavy silks cannot be used on upholstery due to its weave and finish. Truly, the mill has to determine its use. All fabric manufacturers will mark their fabric for end use. Flip to the inside back of the fabric book for the list of end uses. If the fabric is rolled and hung on a display rack, look on the hanging tag. If it is not marked and you are in a reputable decorating fabric store, ask the salesperson if it can be used for uphostery. Generally speaking--and this is assuming you are in a decorating fabric store--if you see a fabric the weight of shirting or a bed sheet, it is not upholstery grade. Most likely for drapes and throw pillows. Look for something the weight of a heavy damask tablecloth. Then ask to confirm it is suitable for upholstery. The linen will probably feel rougher than you envisioned, but it will soften in time and washings. Have you considered purchasing a slipcover? It maybe a lot less trouble. Many places will custom make it to ensure a good fit....See MorePlease help me decorate - paint, windows, slipcover
Comments (8)I love your wall colors. LOL I can only tell you what gives me inspiration on pulling colors, is fabric. I go to fabric web pages, especially the ones who have the fabric collections, and usually can get a sense of where I need to go with colors. Because of my simple decorating taste and limited knowledge, I find it easier to concentrate one two rooms at one time and not concentrate on the entire house at once. That's just way too confusing for me. Right now I'm concentrating on foyer/great room. When I finish making those fabric and furniture choices, I'll move on to the other roooms. All of my rooms are off of the great room and don't necessarily "match" the great room. I thought it important for the great room and foyer to "flow" since people will definitely be walking through the foyer into the great room. The bedrooms are similar in hue and I went with all muted colors so there are no "clashes" on your senses as you'd walk from one room to the other. However, the bedrooms and guest bath are all different and will be decorated according to their wall color. All the flooring is the same in all the rooms. With all your adjoining room colors flowing so well together it shouldn't be too difficult to find fabric that will incorporate all those colors and that could be your "jumping off" point, as they call it. One more thing, I would definitely cover the sofa because I think sofa's should be solid or look solid (squint your eyes) and if it looks solid, it's a keeper. Bring in print from other accessories, rugs, pillows, artwork. My great room is Rich Cream, which is a very pale yellow. I plan on a light colored fabric, i.e. beige or something close to that, for the sofa, and the accessories will have the green from the foyer and another 1 or 2 colors as accents. Still up in the air on that. I find if I take it in baby steps then I gain inspiration from the one item/thing I completed. I won't know what fabrics I'll want for chairs and curtains until I can see and feel my sofa. My decorating is based a lot of how the surroundings make me feel also. So maybe you might want to start with the sofa color and then see where that color leads your senses. Here's what inspired my foyer color that leads into my great room color. Don't tell my DH I sent out a photo of the mantle before it was complete. Eekkk!! He likes his "works of art" to be complete before the world sees them. LOL Good luck. My inspiration chicken!! Comments (3)I would make two separate pieces. A seat cover with a skirt or ruffle that has ties underneath to secure it to the legs, and a slip-over back cover that has split side seams with ties for securing above and under the arms. Whatever the choice, you should attach some kind of non-skid material to the inside of the seat cover to keep it from sliding around on the leather. This shouldnÂt involve more than basic sewing on your machine. Hope this gives you some ideas....See MorePlease pick an ottoman. 1 or 2?
Comments (69)Good morning! Trigger pulled on #1. I'll post pics with and without the shelf. When I ordered a rug last year from O, it was here in 2 days. Praying it shows up in one piece and is as nice as those reviews say. Oh, and I did use my 7% coupon. However, I couldn't figure out how to go through ebates AND use the discount (had to activate it through my email and couldn't find an actual code to plug in) so I figure I'll contact ebates later....See Morecarolb_w_fl_coastal_9b
