Appliances Design Dilemma Kitchens

New home build kitchen appliances-guidance needed

Looking for some assistance on our new home build and kitchen appliances. First we are getting a discount from a family on bosch/thermador so it makes all other brands less of a consideration. I already know i'm getting a bosch french door refrig and a 800 series DW. I'm leaning toward induction top , that way i avoid a gas hook fee in the kitchen , plus i like what I've read about gas vs. induction. Bosch only offers a 30 inch range with induction. I feel this limits the oven capacity, so do I go with a 36 induction top and add a double oven wall unit( this increases costs because I have to pay for a cabinet to house them. Any idea on potential configurations, or bosch vs thermador on ranges/induction tops. Thanks for any help.

So, it sounds like you’re already decided. Or, you‘re trying to decide on if a 30” range is enough for you.

What is your current configuration? Do you find the capacity adequate for your cooking needs?

If your budget prevents you from getting the 36” rangetop with a double wall oven, how about a single wall oven?

thanks for the response. Yep trying to decide if I can get by with a 30inch bosch range w/induction top. No current configuration other than a 30 inch which at times won't hold two large casserole dishes on the same level. Issues I see with the wall units are the capacity, it seems like most are a 30inch oven at best. Have thought about the dual fuel 36inch, pro thermador which would be a 2nd option. However, would like to avoid gas if possible. I know , 1st world problems, but feel like we get one chance to get the kitchen right on the build. You have presented some great questions.

I would consider getting a cooktop/rangetop and separate ovens. You can pick exactly the components that fit your needs. If one thing goes out, you don't have to replace it all. If you like to bake I would consider an electric oven. There is a lot written on the difference between the two. I think having convection makes the biggest difference. Some ovens have modes to be very specific in how heat is directed. They are wonderful if they are proven and work. They are additional electronics that in the worst case can be subject to damage from self cleaning or just not work, causing hot spots. A current issue with some ovens is the enamel of blue ovens. I have a Wolf and Electrolux both bake great but I just discovered that both floors of the oven are pitting over the elements. Sheesh! I had problems with the Elux initially and they replaced the oven because the enamel was chipping. It is out of warranty but I do have an extended warranty. The Wolf is parts only so will have to see what they will do. Neither has been exposed to very high heat. I had a Dacor range and oven 5 years ago with blue enamel and it came off too. There have been some things written about blue enamel. Have you considered induction for a cooktop? Agree with above there is so much written. At the bottom of the appliance forum home page, there is a search box. We don't use the freezer much so we decided to put a cheap ole upright in the laudry room and go with the larger all refrigerator in the main work space. I've looked at the Miele and did like it especially the utensil tray on top. Haven't even thought about the Asko but will give that a look as well! Thanks!

We have purchased a home to be built in Eagle, Idaho. The kitchen is quite large with an open floorplan. I am sensitive to noise and prefer quieter appliances. We are able to upgrade all the appliances. I am extremely frustrated with the various problems and unreliability of so many products. I need to upgrade the double ovens, microwave, 36" gas stovetop, and dishwasher. I love to cook and plan to hold holiday dinners at our new home. When I reviewed stovetops I found so many with knobs that broke and failed burners. Found the GE Monogram series which seems promising. Willing to mix appliances. Able to spend around 15k for all appliances. What has worked for you?

I'd likely want to put the refrigerator where the "P" ?pantry? is now located so you're not bumping the corner of the island to reach the firdge from the stove. Putting at least a narrow countertop on each side of the refrigerator can give you a place to set items taken out of it. Definitely would NOT want the HEAT of the oven(s) (or stovetop) adjacent to the fridge. -- put at least a 16"-18" countertop between them. You're sink appears to be at a window at an outside wall? That is a long way to walk from fridge to sink. Any tiny prep sink in that huge island is going to end up being used a lot more because of that. How many people do you need to seat? You might consider a narrower "L" shaped island or even a [ shaped island to create a more conversation friendly space at the bar (with more elbow room for each person as well).

Lots of houzzers recommend a breville countertop oven if you only occasionally need overflow oven space. Wouldn’t work for everyone, but definitely works for some.

I would try to get what you want during your remodel, as you will live with your decisions for a while. Wolf makes a 36 inch induction range, but not Bosch or Thermador. I have double ovens and love them. Weigh your options. Is it less expensive to get a cabinet, double ovens, and the 36 inch induction top OR to get your Bosch fridge and dishwasher at the discount and spend the $ on the Wolf 36 inch induction range? What's the cost difference in each option and/or does one layout function better than the other. Looking at those 2 things should help you come up with the best fit for you.

I've thought about that, I like the wolf 36 induction but feel like that may be the more $$$ option even with my Bosch DW and Fridge. I think we are going to spreadsheet all options, I think that will reveal the best option. Like you said we have to live with the choice for awhile, you can't make a small range bigger , so I'm inclined larger capacity ovens.

@Jack Greene - A spread sheet is great. It will let you know how much extra it will cost if you go with the Wolf. Fisher and Paykel also make a 36 inch induction range. I don't know the quality of F&P, and don't know if the looks would go with your space, but it could be another option. Bosch double ovens retail from $2800 - $3200, with the Benchmark series running $4200. Of course, you have your discount so only you know the cost of the ovens. Then the cabinet and perhaps extra electrical for the double ovens come into play. In addition, there may be a functional advantage in your layout for a single range vs. double ovens. If needing help with kitchen layouts, there are some GREAT designers here that really provide the best functional space given your parameters. Some of them are better than kitchen designers homeowners have hired. I've seen them rescue some very bad plans before someone made a big mistake.
