Christmas Baking: Decorating version

OK, so I'm a day or two behind, LOL

I. We did actually decorate those sugar cookies, and my two daughters, the supposed adults of the group, had a frosting fight. I think Ashley lost....

Time out was taken to wash up, and then we decorated.

At least the kids behaved themselves, but for some reason only The Princess stayed within the Christmas theme. Maci frosted what was supposed to be a gingerbread boy but somehow became Cookie Monster:

Her sister, Madi, decided that all the bells should be aliens and gave them eyes, some more than two.

Bud was specializing in sprinkles and candies, using copious amounts of them indiscriminately, with no particular placement. He's 15, it's all sugar to him, LOL.

His cousins followed his example:

With the frosting left after the fight, Amanda frosted her gluten free sugar cookies, she got her own clean end of the counter for those, and she doesn't like sprinkles, so she used frosting only:

The Princess, of course, was very careful with her decorating, being above such childish behavior, LOL. I have only one picture of her, which I posted on another thread, but here it is anyway:

And a wonderful mess was made by all.

As "punishment" for the frosting fight, I made Amanda and Ashley clean up the mess while I had a cookie with my coffee!

Woody...I love the idea of your pudding, but my kids are really looking forward to the Chocolate Trifle this year. So I will have to try your recipe next year. :-) It's been a long time since we've made Chocolate Trifle. This is what we are making for Thanksgiving but possibly will make it again at Christmas. It is a great recipe for a Christmas dessert. It's not really a 'written down' recipe. The ingredients are all just layered in the Trifle Bowl in whatever amounts fit. It is simply chocolate cake, unfrosted, chocolate pudding [not instant], whipped cream, crushed Heath Bars. That's it! It is really delicious and very rich. We like to make our own pudding and cake and whipped cream, but if you were in a hurry, you could always buy the cake and whipped cream. It also is a very pretty dessert if you have it in a large straight sided glass bowl. Great to bring to a gathering too. Not sure what other baking we will do this year for Christmas. Sometimes we make cookies for gifts. I'll have to come back as Christmas starts to get closer to see what we are doing. Looking forward to lots of recipes here. :-) pm2

Finished decorating! Ok, I'm not the best :-) The moose are a little strange, but they are big and brown so if someone doesn't figure out they are moose, they will think bear.... and either one is appropriate for MN!

Dances, Thank you for the cookie recipe! I no longer have the stamina to mix a big batch of cookies together and then bake them all, but this is doable. Mix, put in fridge for when I want them, bake as many as I want at a time (I even used the toaster oven for a few), and they taste great! SharonG/FL

Colleen, I can only say that you should be sure they are at least written down. My family had/has several "secret" recipes that no one knows how to make because they were family secrets and younger generations just aren't interested enough to ever obtain them before elderly family members died. I was guilty of that myself with some of Grandma's recipes, but fortunately she shared them and so I found other family members that still had them years after Grandma was gone and I finally decided I wanted to make them. I have a cousin who, when her Mother died, just rented a dumpster. When I asked about old family movies, hoping to have them put onto DVDs, she told me that she didn't think anyone was interested in all that "old stuff" and they went into the dumpster with pretty much everything else that wasn't worth money. (sigh) I know we've had this discussion here before, but today's generation just isn't as interested in "family heirlooms", they are more mobile and have less space and different lifestyles. Someone might want those recipes later, though, and hopefully they'll be preserved in some way. Annie

Truthfully, the Cookie Monster was my favorite too, and I don't know how a kid could look at bells and see aliens, LOL.

It's one of my favorite Christmas "traditions", the decorating of the cookies. I'll be sad when everyone grows up and doesn't want to do it any more. Then again, you see how grown up my daughters are when it comes to frosting!

Good memories! That has been one of our family traditions as well. No more little kids around to enjoy it nowadays - and esp. this year 😕

Carol, I'm lucky that my girls are close and are relatively "well protected". Amanda works in a nursing home and is tested every two days. The kids all are doing school on line. Ashley has so many health issues that she has pretty much become a hermit and her husband is a Detective, so spends much of his time in his own office and also gets tested weekly. So, that's my "circle" along with Elery. We haven't visited his kids since July, or seen any of the rest of my family or his, we have no lunches with friends, limit our trips to the feed store and grocery store. I do Mother's shopping along with my own, much of it on line. So, we are as safe as I can make us, and we get our fun when we can! That frosting fight was more fun for the kids to watch than television, LOL.

FOAS, I have just been trying to keep something, ANYTHING, kind of normal for the kids this year. So we have cookies and I put up the tree and we baked and decorated and had the traditional dinner. They had no caroling, no Christmas Eve candlelight service, no Nutcracker, no 3D Christmas movie at the theater, no Christmas concerts, no Secret Santa at school because school is all on line, and this is Makayla's Senior year too boot. So, no Prom, no Homecoming Dance, even graduation is in limbo. I had to make sure we had sugar!

We also drove around and looked at Christmas lights and watched Elery's son on YouTube doing the Christmas concert at his church, he's the music director at a large church and they have a robust on-line offering, plus we KNOW him, so it was even better.

Oddly enough, it's also tradition for no one to help me take all that stuff back down...

Although it didn't have all the bells and whistles (literally) it sounds very nice Annie. Particularly about watching Elery's son on Christmas Eve online. Our church streamed the service Wed., I think so that everyone involved could be home on Christmas Eve. It wasn't quite the same, but it was still nice. What I especially like is if I'm feeling in need of spiritual uplift, I can attend services through streaming almost any time, at several of the denominational congregations of ours, or some of my friends. For example I attended a "Virtual Christmas Vespers" at a friend's YMCA camp in NH and the Advent sermons of my pastor friend in Philly. I'd like to figure out how to stream them through our TV. It's possible but we haven't figured it out yet. The laptop doesn't quite cut it for some things. But I can watch Sunday church on my phone propped up on the counter while I do dishes or eat breakfast or stream compline in bed before lights out, so there are some advantages of portability.

I am getting SO annoyed with my GW/Houzz issues. On GW I can search but not post, on Houzz I can post but not search. And I can’t start a thread anywhere. So that means I can’t search for a thread and post to it. The best I can do is tack on my question somewhere that seems vaguely appropriate. This thread opens with sugar cookies and my question is sugar cookies, so Annie you win, like it or not.

I wanted to try and compare cut-out sugar cookie recipes. Chose a few from https://www.gardenweb.com/discussions/6019417/share-your-sugar-cookie-recipe#n=17 that I had ingredients on hand for. All call for resting the disks for an hour. Well that hour has turned into about four days now. Should they still be ok? I’m at my wit’s end with stuff coming out of my oven badly so I don’t even want to try it if there’s a probability they’ll be bad for any reason. Thanks!

Yes, it's fine. Truthfully, a lot of the time I don't chill the cookie dough because I have to pound it flat or let it sit until it's pliable enough to roll, which seems like a waste of time.

I often freeze a batch of sugar cookie dough and then just thaw it and roll it out, bake a dozen as I want them. Sometimes they are just plain round cookies, not even shapes, depending on how lazy I am and how badly someone wants cookies, LOL.

They'll be fine, bake them or freeze that dough until you can!
