Garden Web now part of houzz
Comments (136)I loved gardenweb, but I will so not be returning to this walmartization of yet another good community interaction. I hope gardenweb's owners made a bundle because they maintained an excellent source of intercommunication between garden enthusiasts for a long time; but the bigger fish will always eat the smaller I suppose. The question is, who or what will be the biggest fish and simply devour us all? BTW, houzz is extremely user unfriendly, no doubt slapped together by some billionaire with a "bright idea," customers and clients be damned. What's new?...See MoreNew houzz look
Comments (39)I found both sites last September when I began planning a remodel that is just about to start. Houzz was eye candy and inspiration but intimidating in all the perfection. GW was real life, been in the trenches people detailing their projects. I spent hours learning about stuff I never thought I needed to know. Now as I am about to begin my own projects, I feel assured in my decisions. I don't have the pleasure of all the friendships that have been forged over years. I wish I did and maybe one day I will. But both sites helped me so much with decisions I needed to make. For me its not a question about sterile feeling because I am just happy to find friendly, knowledgeable people who happen to like many of the same things I do and were willing to share. Most of what I read that people don't like comes down to how the website is designed. They (houzz) had a stand alone, successful site. Just imagine the work that has gone on behind the scenes to make a pretty smooth transition, all things considered. I feel they are genuinely trying to marry the two sites but that takes time and patience plus a tremendous amount of I want to poke out my eyeballs work. If all of this has been too much, too overwhelming, too sad, take a break but there are are so many who read and learn from your posts. Someone in the world needs you and your knowledge or friendly postings. I know I did and I am so happy you once took the time to share. I really do appreciate the whole community....See MoreTomatoville membership?
Comments (48)I've been a member here as well as Tville for over 10 years. Tomatoville is privately owned and operated by one man who pays all the bills himself, there is no advertising, and no membership fees. It is a sideline for him, and he maintains it as a hobby as he finds time. So if he has other more pressing matters to take care of, Tville maintenance has to wait. I agree, the instructions for joining should be revised and updated to indicate possible longer wait times which seems to be the norm in these later years. He also has experienced many more hacker attacks and had problems with the company hosting his server, all of which he has to work to resolve himself, which is why occasionally the site is offline for a few hours or even a couple of days. His vetting procedures for checking on valid email addresses in order to weed out potential hacker problems likely slows things down too. Since groups of new users appear in the Town Hall section in batches every few weeks or months, it doesn't look like he works on them one by one as received, so new requests may be in a longer backlog lineup. You are not being deliberately slighted! One thing I would not do, is to send a nasty email demanding he speed up. He has a low tolerance for bad manners and argumentative users on his site. There is plenty of good information to read there without joining. Seeing pictures would be nice, but hardly a reason not to read the majority of posts which don't even have them. There are some sections you can't access as a lurker, but plenty of others that you can. Each of these message boards has their own atmosphere, a combination of the ownership's goals as well as the community of folks who post there. Tville may not be for everyone....See MoreHOUZZ, your new format SUCKS BIG TIME!
Comments (108)While I will admit that some do seem have difficulties navigating or posting (I think most of that is due to a less than ideally compatible device or browser) I do not find the new format any more difficult to work with or use or navigate than it was before. Different, yes.........but no less user friendly (in many ways it is more user-friendly). And I think some are just a lot more resistant to change than others :-) As an old time GW user (here since almost from the start in the late 90s with Spike), the site has gone through a lot of changes over the years and with different ownership, much good and some not so good. It took me just a couple of days to become comfy with the new format and I have no issues with it now. My primary complaint is with cross posting. While it is NOT a requirement, many seem to think it is so you get threads posted to 3 completely unrelated forums. And those new folks entering directly from the Houzz side of the platform with gardening questions do not realize there are several dozens of gardening forums and just post in the Gardens or Landscape Design forum (the only GW forum that shows up in the Houzz topics listing as well as GW) and I find that very irritating. The LD forum is frequently innundated with completely inappropriate questions!! And I don't find it to be any less of a "community" than it was before. Depending on what forums one frequents, all the same old regular posters are present for the most part with the same friendly interchange and bantering. 11otis, if you scroll up to the start of this thread, you will find that it is posted to the Soils, Compost and Mulch forum in addition to a couple of others. Click on that forum title and it will take you directly to ALL the threads on that forum. Really couldn't be much easier............. :-)...See Moreaprilneverends
