The shutters all need to go they are not appropriate on double windows I think you need to explain a bit more about that you are hoping to accomplish.IMO black windows are a classic but I hate grids so I am with hubby about the no grids but I would stick with double hung if you want to keep the more traditional feel of the house .Maybe a compromise would be just like the first pella pic.To be honest your house does not say center hall colonial at all so I think it can be whatever you like The siding color for me would be a big turnoff I aslo would deal with the landscpaing to allow a much nicer path and view to the entry.

Thank you Patricia! I’m not sure I’m trying to achieve anything with my window choice🤷🏻‍♀️ just being honest that’s probably why I’m uncertain. We were not intending to makeover the exterior of the home as we’re focusing inside for now.

Why not just wait until the inside is done if the windows are okay for now just remove the shutters for a bit of change.As long as the windows are in the proper spaces and you are not planning on any changes there just relax for a bit best to change windows in the spring anyway.

Black windows are NOT a new thing. The house my parents had built in 1984 had a black roof, black exterior doors, white brick and black windows...sounds a lot like the homes now.

Will these be replacement windows or new- construction windows? Replacement windows leave the existing frame in place which would have to be painted or wrapped (if you want black). New construction windows would be more expensive as it requires more reconstruction of the opening.

It would be replacement windows ... the quote we received said something about exterior trim being put on. I obviously don’t have the first clue about replacing windows! 😬

Before you make a decision, you'll have to look at what will remain and get covered. One of the disadvantages of replacement windows is the wider sightlines: more frame, less glass. It will certainly look heavier than the example windows you posted. Maybe your window dealer has an example of a house with replacement casement windows (in double-hung frames) they can show you. They may take more of the frame out in this situation.

Replacement windows are usually smaller than the ones they replace, so you will be losing light if going that route. I'd also look into brands other than Pella. Their reputation is not great. You have a traditional colonial home. Don't try to make it something it's not with black windows. They have their place on some style of homes, but not yours. Stick with white. A nice compromise between what you want and what your husband wants (for your style home) would be grids on the upper portion of the double hung window and clear glass below. It's still appropriate for your home, but gives him a little of what he wants. They are usually a bit cheaper than the windows with grids on both sections. Like the photo below, but in white.

Bronze windows will give you greater flexibility for choosing further colours inside and out than either black or white. They work with both cool and warm colours. Also another vote for losing the shutters altogether. Sorry!

The proportions and sizing is off for typical casement windows. Casements are typically taller than wide and these will appear squatty in my opinion. Typically when replacing double hungs with casements the opening are changed and new construction units are used. I would second the opinion to also look for something other than Pella.

Black windows on this type of colonial with a large bay will not work. It will look AWFUL. Just because people do it doesn’t make it right. This isn't a center hall older brick colonial from days gone by. It looks something built in the 70’s. It’s not the kind of home for casements and it’s not the type of home for black. At least not without a total overhaul that it doesn’t need.
