HI -Ms . Spence --- Are you renting or did you just buy ? How tall is the empty space and do you need the extra storage that you would have to have a ladder to reach ?? Can you change the pendent lights for some nice big white globe ones that will give better light and fill the visual space . You could have more upper cabinets all along the top but make sure the upper cabinets now will support ones added to the top of them. Or even just adding more 12 inch uppers . Or find wicker baskets that are square with lids like a picnic basket or suitcase or even some decorative cardboard boxes all matching to fill the space . The only trouble with that is you need to lift them down to find things . Or just ignore the space and if you painted the walls a lighter color then that top space could be painted black to balance with the black appliances and then ignore it as bare space ....... I see now you are renting so maybe just ignore or focus on something else . Ikea has some shelf units that have squared openings you could lay up there if you cannot ignore .

@Melissa R is correct, you could use a filler strip there. But that doesn’t solve the fact that the solution to your microwave door problem means the cabinet on the left is now installed on top of window trim. Your microwave is too big for the space you have allotted for it, or you haven’t installed it properly. So pull down the cabinets and microwave, rehang the cabinets correctly, and move on from there. I know it sucks to realize you’ve made a mistake, but scootching things around to cover it up just creates more issues down the road, as you now realize. Solve the actual original problem, the microwave, and everything will fall back into place. BTW, you need a filler strip between the upper on the right and the wall as well. Good luck!

Gas stoves are the worst for this...but my experience was it only appeared directly above the stove. For sure the type of hood/ventilation one has would make a huge difference. I just packed #1DDs kitchen for a move to a new home. The open shelving above the stove top was GROSS along with everything on it. No where else. My crystal, described earlier in this thread, was never greasy. Here in our 'forever' home I have a soffit that holds a set of God Bless America plates. They get cleaned once a year and the only ones with any grease are directly above the electric stove top, and it's not a big deal. Dawn soap is your friend!!
