Oh, Parke....I am so sorry about this new challenge for Glenda. I hope that you are doing well and that you and your wife have successfully recovered from Covid.

Just one of many possibilities: My father completely lost his mind during multiple hospital visits last summer. After much frustration convincing the staff that despite his age (92) his mental baseline was the same as theirs or mine, they attributed it hospital-induced delirium. Reading up on that, what surprised me most was that I had never heard of it given how common it is past a certain age. One of the triggers is isolation, which of course there‘s more of in the current environment.

Fortunately went away each time he came home, after some time. Some really scary time.

I hope that anything Glenda may be experiencing is less severe and equally temporary. I’m glad that she’s being made aware of all the good thoughts and wishes she’s receiving here.

It could be the hospital induced delirium but it could also be that she is not aware of how long she has been there. I am aware there are calendars or were in the room but time passes. Not sickness but I have missed putting out the trash because I was certain trash was not today.

(((Glenda))), don't give up or give in. You can beat whatever this is. You are stubborn!

FOAS, I never heard of hospital-induced delirium. It's good to know. I shall tuck that info away in the brain which, so far, is pretty reliable. Let's hope that's all it is. The good news is, Glenda is where she needs to be right now. Praying all goes well and she has a speedy recovery. For now, she's in good hands and getting the care that is needed.

Hoping for quick healing for Glenda and joining us on the KT once again. She is missed.

Hopefully her delirium is not a sign of a serious issue. I once visited my elderly DM when she wasn't answering her phone and she seemed to think that a couple of my sisters had been to visit her, although they lived in a different city. I thought stroke, but it turned out it was a high fever due to a UTI. After treatment, she was back to her old self again.

Yes delirium is a very good possibility. The drs most aware of this are neurologists and psychiatrists. It is also common in the elderly whenever they have any infection. My mom gets like this whenever she has a UTI. It wouldn’t hurt to check for that. The first time she had delirium ( within days if re Ive ring from the flu) we thought something drastic had happened! The ER had no clue. She went to the psychiatrist a few days later and she knew immediately what it was. Only time cures that. Mom is in an assisted living facility that went into lockdown last week and she seems to have delirium. Waiting on a culture to see. It’s hard to tell now with her because her dementia is also getting worse. Sadly enough, we are hoping she has delirium from an infection. At least that subsides over time. Please make sure Parke talks to drs about delirium.

Hopefully it is just from being in the hospital as others have said. Have seen it many times. Hoping she gets to rehab and back to the Table soon.

Prayers. Older people sometimes have mini stokes so maybe that's it.

I am so hoping she did not have a stroke of any kind. Prayers for her and her family.

I did not know the term "hospital induced delirium" but I do clearly remember when my mom had been hospitalized . She was otherwise very lucid and sharp but after a few days in the hospital she was not making sense (and even for a few minutes with my sister and me in the room, speaking a different language that seemed to be her own...). After she came home for a day or two she would have fleeting moments of not making sense but then she was back to herself.

Anyway, it seems like primarily pretty good news about Glenda holding steady. Thank you for the updates.

Sleep deprivation, especially in the ICU where the lights are on all the time and people wake you often to check your vitals, is another cause of hospital induced delirium.

I don't know if Glenda had anesthesia, but that can cause temporary dementia as well. Of course, the hospital should know this can happen. When my dad had heart surgery at 86 the hospital warned us that this could happen, and I'm glad we were warned.

My dad had that confusion after he'd been in the hospital and had a couple of back-to-back significant surgical procedures. We were very concerned about stroke, but they did an MRI or CT - I don't remember which - (at 2am!!!) to check. No stroke, but definitely confused and argumentative and slurring words. Once he got out of the hospital, he did get better.

My father also experienced hospital induced delirium this summer. He is 93. I had never heard of it but my daughter who is an RN, identified it right away. Once I read up on it, I discovered that it is not at all uncommon.

Something that Glenda's Mom would not have but having low sodium levels or probably some of the other minerals can lead to what appears to be a stroke. My father was following my mother's low sodium diet when she was in the hospital. He came for dinner and after he started talking and acting strange we took him to the hospital thinking he was having a stroke. More normal for low sodium apparently is to simply pass out. Just something to file away in case you or a family member have a problem.

Praying that Glenda didn't have a stroke and she gets well soon.

Oh Glenda. You need to fight this. We're keeping your chair warm but you need to be in it.

Hopefully Glenda hasn't suffered a stroke and that it is something more simple.

After my father's hemorrhagic stroke, he was very confused on time for quite awhile, even when he was perfectly clear on everything else. He was especially confused on time, whether it was 9am or 9pm. I chalked it up to the fact that his ICU room for a week had no outside window, and the next room for a week had a window to a courtyard. But it may have been more than that, I see now!
