No they do not work together and for sure too many patterens . May be a nice stripe with the colors from the rug other than that you need to post a pic of the whole space.

Not crazy about them together, but that rug is gorgeous! The sectional is fine, just think the pillows might look better in a bedroom. But it's not awful; live with it awhile until you find some pillows that work better with the rug.

I would look for more complimentary cushions and in order to find the right combination, suggest bringing home quite a few to see how they work with each other and rug and just return those you don’t want.

Agreed with the above. The rug is sooo soo pretty but just does not go in this space. Move it to a bedroom. It’ll look great with less going on. This space needs a lighter color rug with maybe some black in it. The pillows on the couch are fine. But I would look for something better. Don’t get me wrong they’re very pretty pillows and they’re fine. But I think we can do better match. Can you take a new better pic of the whole space

Beautiful, classic rug. My thinking is along the lines of Maureen’s, bringing in a combo of pillows more complimentary to the colors in it. I think bringing in some texture would look nice, too.

Multiple patterns and textures do help to bring things to life, and I think you already have a wonderful start with that fabulous rug, so lucky you!

I’ve included a larger picture of the space. As soon as we get financing finalized we plan to completely open up this space. The wall you see behind the sectional will no longer be there, making it an open concept living room, kitchen and dining room. The only furniture I plan on keeping at this time in the sectional. I need everything else 😬 coffee table, side table, lamps, media stand etc.

This home is small, and the living room is probably the best room for this size. I do have two bedrooms that might be an option for it. The first one is our guest bedroom which I’ve painted grey wisp by BM. The second is the master which I’d love to put a dusty blue grass cloth in.

The room looks cozy and a good size - why do you want to knock down the wall? Often we see that many people find open concept homes even more challenging with regard to furniture placement and defining areas within the space, so I'm just curious about what attracts you to doing that.

Oh, and I think the rug and couch are great together. Just get a few more toss pillows that pick up its colors better.

Here are some ideas if keeping rug for now. Quiet pillows, remove mirror because it is too small for your sectional. I added art to compliment rug. I added seat for small child (elephant) for fun, used some cheeta print throw and put your dog on it! :) I added arc lamp for evening lighting. Various accessories on glass and gold metal coffee table. This integrates the rug but sets up for future look with minimal problems.

You can buy pillow covers on Amazon. They are inexpensive & come in every color that you can imagine.

The main problem is that the pillows have a white background...while everything else is beige...but there is also a style conflict...the room is more sophisticated...elegant...the pillows are perky, more country casual...with so much pattern in the rug a more subtle pattern on the pillows will be less distracting

It is hard to tell but the border looks narrower by the window...if so...rotating the rug may center the center motif better ...on the sectional

I would use pillows that pick up colors from your rug, whichever colors that you like, and I would emphasize texture in the pillow colors, such as velvet, embossed velvet, folded velvet or folded silk. Here are some examples from Williams-Sonoma and Horchow.

In addition I would get a marvelous throw (you can make it yourself) that ties in all the colors from your rug and the throw pillows.

You can also look for embossed or burned out velvet fabric and have your own pillow covers made.

I don't know how old you are, but there are elements in that room that read stuffy-grandma-ish.

It's fine and divine to have valuable old things such as your rug, it shows your good taste!

But the mirror over the sectional and the lamps, and the curtains are superannuated.

When you can, please replace them.

Perhaps the curtains only need to have the fastenings at the top changed?

And do think about jazzing up the decor with fabric such as this one below on a pillow, although you can certainly put something like this on a chair.

The juxtaposition of a more on-trend fabric with a traditional carpet will eliminate the "granny" from your decor.

btw, don't paint your walls white. White will really set up a totally different vibe. If you do that, the rug won't work and anything in pillows will clash. So, figure out what your "final" look is and then select items that work with that so at the end, you have a unified look that works.

Thanks for everyone’s thoughts. Once we finish our major renovation I’ll start searching for fabrics for new pillows and the future accent chair once the room is set.

As for opening up the room, this house is a 1940s Florida home. Behind the wall the sectional is on, is the kitchen followed by another narrow sitting room and informal dining room. The kitchen is too small for us as my boyfriend loves to cook. We want to open the space because it will allow us more usable room.

I've seen lots of homes with wood floors and Persian carpets and white walls.

Admittedly, the proportions of those rooms were different, and the walls had decorative moldings, and so the overall feeling in the room was different.

I suppose that's where something like a photo-editing program comes in.

This room would be enhanced by a pale tint of a color taken from the rug.

But pick a color that enhances your complexion, please.

If watery pea soup makes you look bilious, find another color!

The rug is beautiful. I pick accessories that complement it. And Flo is right - white walls will be jarring. Hopefully someone will give some paint ideas but that’s something you can do later. Bringing the pink into the throw pillows will brighten the sofa.

Yes the rug is a Kerman and is worth a good amount.

As for the rest of the stuff in the room, everything but the sectional, pillows and this rug are my boyfriend’s grandmother’s and came with the house. We plan on replacing all of it including the lamps and drapes but haven’t yet because I wanted to finalize the rug and look for this room first. My mother found out I was looking for a rug and told me this one was in her basement which is why I took it. I was hoping it would seamlessly fit with the pillows I had from my prior apartment because that would have been the easiest thing.

Please, regardless of all suggestions, consider the rug as valuable. At least have it authenticated/appraised.

I appreciate your concern, the house is my boyfriend’s he has now owned it for roughly 5 years. However, we just recently moved into it.

Georgia, you need legal agreement. I am serious on this. You need understanding of your States laws and protections for both of you. That rug might be worth more than the house. It’s a beauty for sure. I know it isn’t pleasant to do and will cost a bit of money but it eliminates a lot of trouble down the road. If not needed, all good. I tried to pull colors from your rug for pillows. If you wish input on kitchen I can help there too. Don’t want to overload you. Removing that wall will most likely require installing a engineered beam. Think a cost of a couple thousand dollars. Start with good structural engineer to come inspect and make recommendations for you. Load bearing walls keep roofs from falling in. Very important. Even supporting while demolition is very important. Not as easy as they show on HGTV etc.

I'm guessing that one of you inherited grandmother's home, and you moved your own casual slip-covered style sectional into it. That explains the total contradiction with the drapes, tables, rug and mirror. It is a very large rug; maybe too big for a bedroom if your home is small. I see why you like it; the colors are appealing, but I doubt it has much value. Certainly worth finding out, but my own experience is that no one will pay you what it is worth. My 5x7 Qum was purchased in the 70's for $2,500. Appraised at $5,000 in the late 80's and can't get $800 for it today, although the original appraiser said it should be worth $10,000+ by now. Depends on where you are and who might pay for it, if you decide you're not keeping it. If you intend to keep all the original furnishings of the home, you should probably plan to style new purchases to fit in well with granny's stuff. Otherwise, you could have a "living" estate sale and get rid of the items that have no real sentimental or high $$ value to you.

The value of the rug has to be set by a qualified appraiser. If you have sales receipts that helps too. However, as deco stated, in today’s market antiques and rugs are very hard to sell and are quite under valued. I would not let this rug drive all your decor decisions. You will be investing a ton of money into that kitchen renovation so hope you have cash reserves to accomplish your dreams.

I appreciate all your comments, but I also doubt the rug is worth more than the house. Even if it was neither of us have an interest in selling family heirlooms.

As for the major renovation Flo Mangan we are lucky that the support beams for this house run from exterior wall to exterior wall and non of the interior walls are supporting walls. We know this process will be very expensive but we know selling this home isn’t an option and it isn’t functional for us now or ever in its current layout.

At this point we are renovating the bathrooms and electrical work to move outlets, put in recess lights, etc to the bedrooms in the house. However, we spend a lot of time in our living room and it currently is filled with furniture that isn’t ours and not my style (with the exception of the sectional, pillows and now this rug). I just want to enjoy my living room and pick things that can be used when we open up the space in 2022.

OK, you are thinking things through and that is wise. As long as a good structural engineer has verified the structural aspects, you are good to go. Do detailed scale drawings to see what size furniture will fit once you have removed the wall you wish to remove. Open layouts have different size furniture requirements. Generally, people think they have more room, but in point of fact, it can be more limiting. Keep the details in mind as you move forward.
