urgent island overhang support question
Comments (11)The plywood is put on before templating and cut to be flush with the cabinets on the side without seating overhang and extending about an inch or two less than you want the overhang on the overhang sides. The templater than measures the plywood and the granite top is made to fit. At least that is how it was done for us. Our steel bars are about 2" wide and 1/2" thick. The steel bars can't crisscross. There isn't enough thickness of the plywood for that. To support an overhang on two sides, the steel bars could run at angles so that they radiate from the corner opposite the overhangs. Our bars were angled to avoid the prep sink and range top cut outs. Our bars are long enough to run all across the top of the island. Our granite has a laminated edge that hides the edge of the plywood. I have friends who don't have a laminated edge who used a piece of molding stained to match their cabinets to cover the plywood edge. The bottom of our plywood is unfinished. I wish I had thought to ask our GC to use one with cherry veneer facing down and stained to match our cabinets. Nobody but me notices it....See MoreQuartzite Island: Best Options for Proper Support?
Comments (8)@suzyq, what a beautiful kitchen! Is the base attached to the floor? Screwed into plywood: plywood between the base and the countertop? Thanks for the picture! @Joseph Corlett, LLC and @ Sophie Wheeler: We don't actually want to float/cantilever it, but good to know given pots of $$$ it could be done. I was trying to explain why our plans show no support (Ikea planner limitation), but it seems my can't-sleep-obsessing-about-the-kitchen-musings didn't translate well! Check on cost of mitering edges: about $1500 extra per fabricator. That includes the extra material and labor. I'll stick with the 3cm, and possibly an ogee edge (otherwise pencil edge). The table base look is our first choice. Found the Osborne Wood table kits through various countertop support discussions here, and they look very good. I've been in touch with them today, and leaning heavily that way. Sophie: Good point about the electric. There will be power for the undermounted microwave and we plan an outlet at each end. Osborne has a option to add outlets right into the legs, although if it's part of an apron the post top must be 5" wide. In this house there is ALWAYS a good place to plug in the blender! If needed, we'll go the route of adding the 15" cabinets. Secure and stable is the priority....See More3cm quartz countertop overhang needs supported over 10"?
Comments (14)Mark_rachel, its only 12" because there is door to my backyard to the right of it and a wall that juts out behind it that would create a bottleneck if the island is too big. That's the most I can have without blocking traffic. When it was designed I wanted a full two feet behind the sink so my kids could sit there without their stuff falling in the sink. It was decided to put cabinets in the back for a little extra storage without the need for extra support. I would love to have a slightly bigger overhang but I don't have to room and yes, I want the best I can get for my money. If you could have the exact same countertop for $2200 vs. $4500 isn't that the way you would go? I'm bucking at the supports because that is what the back cabinets were put there for, supports are going to get in the way of the doors. Mainenell, that's an interesting idea! It would require adapting the back cabinets though or it would block the doors opening. Weedmeister, thanks for the warning. It is firmly bolted in. My husband built the base on site because this house is old and the floor decidedly unlevel....See MoreMax overhang WITH SUPPORT for quartz on island??
Comments (10)I already have an island cabinet. I want to use what I have because it matches my kitchen cabinetry. I just want to make sure I am doing enough to support the overhang. Or do I need to not add the entire addl 12 inches? Currently, my countertops are laminate and there is a 12-inch overhang, but I have plenty of room to make my island deeper when I add my quartz.. So my desire is to extend it an addl 12 inches past what I already have....See Moreweedyacres
