What's the max acceptable quartz overhang over cabinets?
Comments (10)Mike: 1-1/6-1-1/2" is measured from the cabinet face to the edge of the countertops. (After installation, the overhangs went as far out as 1-3/4", despite our kitchen being measured twice and templated twice! Needless to say, I will never have my kitchen renovated again...but I digress.) The 1-1/2" protrusion is from the oversized (18-1/2") pulls installed on our two 36"-wide banks (pictured above). Maybe it's a mental thing: we purchased these pulls off Amazon during some insane sale/pricing error ($15 as opposed to the standard $100+) -- maybe I've just convinced myself not to care how far they stick out. :) Or maybe the aisle is wide enough, such that it's never an issue. Or maybe, due to our not having changed the footprint of our cabinets (we've lived here for 25+ years), we didn't need to 'get used to' a different path which may have involved dodging new protrusions. Or maybe, with all of the garbage workmanship we've had to endure, PP is the least of my concerns at this point....See More3cm quartz countertop overhang needs supported over 10"?
Comments (14)Mark_rachel, its only 12" because there is door to my backyard to the right of it and a wall that juts out behind it that would create a bottleneck if the island is too big. That's the most I can have without blocking traffic. When it was designed I wanted a full two feet behind the sink so my kids could sit there without their stuff falling in the sink. It was decided to put cabinets in the back for a little extra storage without the need for extra support. I would love to have a slightly bigger overhang but I don't have to room and yes, I want the best I can get for my money. If you could have the exact same countertop for $2200 vs. $4500 isn't that the way you would go? I'm bucking at the supports because that is what the back cabinets were put there for, supports are going to get in the way of the doors. Mainenell, that's an interesting idea! It would require adapting the back cabinets though or it would block the doors opening. Weedmeister, thanks for the warning. It is firmly bolted in. My husband built the base on site because this house is old and the floor decidedly unlevel....See MoreInstalling island overhang support posts
Comments (5)That needs to be pulled immediately! It’s a huge risk. The support for this has to be integrated with the cabinet sides, just like creating a table. The entire design must be created to support the additional weight. Posts are not stable without the framework to keep them in place. That framework could be invisible steel, or wood, but it HAS to exist, and be designed as a whole. This is a 36” x26” overhang. We used a 1/4” steel plate here, with small welded flanges on the edges to decrease deflection and increase rigidity. It’s bolted to the 3/4” cabinet box with bent tabs, and then the decorative end panel covered the side. It has a pin locator in the floor for the post, for additional stability against kids sliding in socks. And of course the island is firmly fastened to the foundation too....See MoreWhich of these options is best to support my quartz island overhang?
Comments (8)i am a fabricator. A post in the corner with a support beam going to the cabinet will be sufficient. The beam needs to be securely supported by the small cabinet. Easiest way is to extend the beam over the cabinet. If you screw into the side of the cabinet you need to make sure the cabinet is structurally sound at that point. Note also the foot of the post should be securely anchored to the floor....See MorePete Malloy
