Lighting for L-shaped island with bar?
We're undergoing massive reno so there are a ton of decisions to be made on the fly. Suddenly, we need to choose lighting for the L-shaped island/with built-in bar (41" height). We originally planned to wait until the island was in place before deciding what the lighting should look like. But, of course, the electrician needs to get the wiring done before we can close up the ceilings and we'll need to install new lighting soon after.
We're ripping out a load-bearing wall and moving support beams into the attic to combine our small u-shaped kitchen and the weird room next to it to give us a large L-shaped kitchen that is open concept with the living room.
We're keeping almost all of the existing cabinetry and countertops and the "peninsula" formerly attached to the removed wall will now be an island in its new location.
The finish on the cabinets (light taupe) and the granite countertops are staying the same. The new backsplash will be a light gray 4"x18" glass subway tile. The island front (65" length) and the right side of the island(~48" length) have an 11" deep bar top that is 41" in height.
All the appliances will be stainless steel. The dining room light has a heavy rectangular light fixture with pillar "globes" that I love.
The new kitchen will be about 12'x19' with only 8' ceilings. The front of the island is about 5 1/2" wide. The countertop height is 36" and the bar height is 41". There will be recessed/can lights everywhere but I want (2?) pendant lights over the island. I'm thinking something like this but in brushed nickel?
PLEASE HELP!! How many pendants? What size? Where can I find them in my budget? (<$150/ea) Should I be looking at something else entirely? TIA!

Comments (8)I'm not sure which layout I like best yet, and it might not be any of them. Here's why. Are you really going to spending your entire time entertaining at your sink? Point being, I actually think an island sink is in the way of any entertaining (and any view) and really limits your prep space. If I'm entertaining, I wash dishes at the end of the party. I try to load dishes into my dishwasher as the event progresses, but I like the island clear of anything since that's where people tend to gather. Having a sink in the middle of the entertaining space gets in the way of all the action. Add dishes that are waiting to be washed will just add to the mess. Having a clear island gives you a TON of prep space. Your prep space in all 4 of those options above is really choppy. So, I'd put your micro drawer in your island. Comments (18)Thank you, everybody. @herbflavor I really appreciate you thinking this through. -The fridge is a counter depth, so I think it may be a little wider than a standard fridge. -Yes, I do want the island to operate as part of the kitchen. I'm personally not a fan of diag cut countertops and cabinets (there is an upper diag cabinet in this layout, but that is going to be switched out) -I'm intrigued by the idea of putting the coffee bar on that north wall, but I worry about this looking like one large long wall kitchen as opposed to keeping it in the "center" of the house. There's also the question of what I'd do with the rest of that long south wall. @biondanonima (Zone 7a Hudson Valley) -Yes, there will be a mini-fridge / wine fridge in the bar. No running water though to keep costs down. It is a little annoying to walk to other sink to get water for coffee, but for me not a dealbreaker. Adding snacks to that is a great idea! The first response to this post got my heart beating and I almost texted my designer to call the whole thing off. (I appreciate truthful and frank comments that appear on houzz.) Feeling a little better now. This may not be the most ideal set up, but it will meet our family's needs better than the current open nothingness. Let's call it "a creative solution?" Also I think @herbflavor is correct that just updating the surfaces will make the entire kitchen feel better. Comments (5)Curious what you decided. Having the same dilemma with our planned l-shaped island. 113” long on one side, 60” on the other side of the L- whole thing is 36” wide. Looking at 8” pendants _ do we need 4 or 5. The 60” side is essentially our dining spot with stools, the longer side has sink/trash/dishwasher. 3 years agoTo save money and because I love my granite countertops, we're reusing them. So some things are set in stone (literally). Everything to the left of the sink can't be moved (especially the gas stove). I can rearrange what's under the countertop to the right (so I could switch the dishwasher to be closer to the sink, but when the kitchen was u-shaped, I had put the silverware drawer to the right of the sink and the dishes in the cabinet above it so I could easily put things away - whether from the sink or the dishwasher.
I can still move some stuff around because the cabinet maker hasn't come yet to build the missing base cabinet (24") and the new 21" cabinet which I designed to go all the way down to the countertop (like the corner pantry next to the fridge to use as a pantry since we don't have a lot of storage space for food.
The countertop on the island is only 14" deep because the bar was already in place when the countertops were installed. I could remove the bar and make the countertop all one height but it would probably leave an ugly seam and the grains would go in different directions. Everyone in the family is tall (except my MIL in her wheelchair) and there isn't that much seating, so the bar stools are/were actually used a lot

3 years agoI've heard pendant lighting should be 30" from the countertop. With my 8' ceilings and 41" bar top, does that mean my fixtures can only be 24" from top to bottom including the suspension "chain." Or can I shift them away from the bartop toward the countertop and be able to use that extra 5-6"? How much of that should be the actual fixture?
I don't like the bare Edison bulbs. I was kind of hoping to find something rectangular with the frosted cylinder in the middle but I can't find anything with the brushed nickel finish. Suggestions?
Thanks for all of the help so far! The electrician comes early this week but the entire reno should be done in 2 weeks so I need to decide on actual light fixtures ASAP to get them (hopefully!) ordered in time.- PRO
