Trending Now: The Top 10 New L-Shaped Kitchens on Houzz
A look at the most popular kitchen photos uploaded in the past 3 months confirms a trend in kitchen layouts
In January, we reported that L-shaped kitchens had edged out U-shaped ones as the most popular kitchen layout, and the most popular kitchen photos uploaded to Houzz since Jan. 1, 2018, support that data. L-shaped layouts dominate the top pictures, presented here in descending order, and show a range of interpretations of this versatile kitchen layout.
10. Simple and soothing. In this kitchen in Birmingham, Alabama, a muted palette creates a soothing, welcoming space in a way that doesn’t compete for attention with other areas.
9. Island dreams. This large white oak butcher block island countertop cascades into a dining table. River gravel aggregate in the polished concrete floors gives a dappling counterpoint to the tight vertical grain pattern in the custom rift-cut white oak cabinets.
8. Add-on awesomeness. Homeowners usually take advantage of open L-shaped layouts by adding a generous island. But they don’t have to stop there. The owner of this Phoenix kitchen decided to include a contrasting extra storage cabinet for barware and an eclectic look.
6. Floor to ceiling. These jewel-like blue cabinets go all the way to the ceiling to form a super-efficient storage wall in a relatively small space that’s big on glamour.
5. Light and airy. Wrapping a kitchen in a corner and adding an open island table creates a breezy look, as evident in this spacious Denver kitchen.
4. Compact but complex. This London kitchen fills a small punch-out addition flooded with light from a glass ceiling. The abundance of light means that this space can handle the dark cabinets and accents for a beautifully complex style.

3. Open season. In this open-plan home in Orange County, California, a generous dose of white, along with navy blue perimeter cabinets and expansive countertops, makes for a breezy kitchen zone.
2. Dig in to the details. This sprawling Los Angeles kitchen has countertops that go on for days. But, then again, nothing is really glossed over here. Shiplap walls, gorgeous brass swing-arm wall sconces, a striking range hood and even the X detail on the end of the island — this corner kitchen packs some serious attention to detail.
1. Feel-good farmhouse. In the most-saved kitchen photo uploaded since Jan. 1, an L-shaped layout with an island provides a soothing mix of wood tones and species for a familiar farmhouse-inspired look in Montana.
