cultured marble shower vs tile shower on 1st floor
Comments (13)would like follow up to this discussion we have older home in DFW area--getting ready to put it on the market shower and master bath need work shower is tiled but 25+ yrs old and probably sheetrock vs cement backed walls--could have some nasty stuff when it is torn out (as our contractor warned us--said he never regrouts older showers when doing remodeling--because most of them just have sheetrock and bad shower pans--but always goes down to the studs) counter tops and tub are cultured marble-- my husband thought to put in granite countertops and new fiberglass tub w/tile top and new tile shower our contractor gave us a fairly reasonable price except it does not include sinks, fixtures and the tile would be pretty basic... we had someone come measure for new cultured marble countertops and tub and also a cultured marble shower stall because most homes in our area have not upgraded their baths ... the cultured marble guy said that because the shower door is more narrow and there is a stepdown into the shower that they would probably have to cut the wall pieces and have a join/grout line vs having them the full length of the tiled walls I asked about having a tile insert line--like 6 x 6 glass mosaic sheets--which he said could be done... anyone have pictures of shower like that or have you done something like that yourself...See MoreMarble tile discoloration in shower
Comments (69)Uh oh! We just put in a marble hex floor on our small shower in the powder room. But we used crema marfil, though I'm sure it has the same problems. The door was just installed and we still need to have the room painted and so haven't used the shower yet. It would only get limited use because hubby showers in there on very early golf days once or twice a week so he doesn't wake me up. Very considerate : ) Hopefully with limited use this doesn't happen but I have no idea and am now a bit worried. Charlesg270, any update? Have you used your shower yet?...See MoreGlass Shower door pulling marble shower wall away from drywall.
Comments (15)"What could cause this to happen?" It's more an issue with the hinge screws not being anchored to the wall framing versus the marble not being properly installed. With the weight and moment of the door pulling on the upper hinge, and with the hinges only being secured to the "marble slab", it caused the slab to separate from the wall. " How can it be fixed?" As has been discussed,if you can add blocking from behind, do it. Reset the slab so it's tight to the backer, then run longer hinge screws through the slab and into the framing. " Who should fix it?" Your GC from the original build is responsible for the details, or in this case, the lack thereof. He should have seen this coming. Ultimately, the GC is responsible for the failure. The guy who installed the marble, it's really not his worry. The glass installer, he should have known that screws set only in a wall slab would not be sufficient long term. The failure is on the GC and the glass guy, partially on the glass guy for not raising an objection. The repair? You'll want to hire someone new to install the blocking and repair the drywall. If your GC is still around, ring him up. Then have the glass guy back to properly anchor the hinges in to the new blocking....See MoreMajor issue with our master bath shower marble floor tiles
Comments (7)It happened to me with a mud bed shower, like yours, except my tile guy waterproofed the whole surface of the mudbed with hydroban (a sort of rubber paint on layer) all the way to the drain. Water got trapped between the tile on top of the hydroban waterproofing layer and would never dry out, like yours, and it spread gradually up from the drain. If he had left a 1/4 inch space at the drain, water would have had a chance to escape. The drain weep holes were open. The thread describing it is here: https://www.johnbridge.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=129219&goto=newpost%3Cbr A mudbed without the additional painted on waterproofing would allow the tile to dry out between uses, but your marble would look wet every day. Many people are OK with that. I would have been OK with that. And there a dozens of ways to do marble improperly at this same website (incorrect preslope is also common). Many hours of reading about it here. We had to rip out the floor and start over. I was able to save the wall tiles with careful demo, new flood test for liner integrity. Its really bad luck....See More- 3 years ago
