I love figs found this forum!! Can I get some quick advice?
Comments (8)Annette.... Growing fig trees is probably one of the easiest, and most delicious things you could do. Decide whether in ground, or containerized. Decide on location. (Full-sun, and heat, is good) Figs grow/develop on new wood, so prune if you must to control growth. Read postings on this forum about when/where to prune, and pinch new growth. The winter will be your problem. If containerized, and heavy...buy a dolly @ Home Depot and roll the plant(s) around. Read postings on winter storage/dormancy. Buying a twig/small, rooted-cuttings is a waste of time. Get a bearing-age tree, and you'll have fruit this year. Check your local garden centers for good trees. Twigs die out if not grown perfectly, and in the long run, you'll get more bang for the buck by starting off with a larger plant. I grow my 6 foot tall, single-stem trees in large storage tubs (with drainage holes), and all branches are grown at the top of the long bare trunks. I roll the trees around on dollies. This saves the back, and I'm hernia free. If you can store the trees (containerized) in an unheated garage or dark, cool, storage shed you'll probably solve your winter problems. Buy a short-season fig variety. If at a bearing age, and growing vigorously, pinch back new growth to 6 leaves on each branch for earlier ripening of main-crop figs. You'll be chowin' down on figs by September, or earlier! Seriously, this forum is the only place to get good, solid, up-to-date, fig-growing information. If you are going to buy figs through the mail, stay away, no...run away! from Ty-Ty, and Willis Orchards. Why?...search this forum. Also, west-coast nurseries are known for selling fig trees with mosaic virus. I learned the hard way. I personally have grown only one short-season variety called "Atreano"...which makes a very large, golden-yellow fig that's really sweet... if, ripened correctly. Do a search for this excellent, smaller-growing fig variety. It's a good start. Deer might not be a problem, but birds could be! Hope this helps you decide what to do. Read everything about growing figs on this forum, then decide how you will want to grow the tree(s)...then, go shopping. It's fun, and you'll be hooked. We were all normal once. : ) : ) BronxFigs...See MoreI've got dwarf hamsters, I need some advice
Comments (2)You could just make a tray out of plastic, corrugated sign board to catch the mess that you could wash down after emptying it. A better solution, though not as easy, would be to fasten sign board panels over the sides of the cage with wire to keep the mess inside. I would also line the floor with it so their feet don't fall through. You could line the underside so they could still get traction from the wire floor. I've included a link to a website on building your own pet cages that may give you some ideas for using sign board, although the site is primarily about guinea pig cages. We had built one of their cages years ago for our piggies and the sign board lasts for years and is very washable, as well as being easy to work with. I don't think you'll have much luck training them to potty in one place. The larger hamsters are much easier because they usually choose one corner, but the dwarf ones just go wherever they are. Here is a link that might be useful: Pet cages...See MoreI think I've found my backsplash- feedback please.
Comments (30)MaWizz: Thank you for the arabesque suggestion. You are definitely not too late since I am still very much ABB. I started this thread right before Christmas, and then with the holidays and travel and a zillion things since, I have not given much thought to my backsplash. By reviving this thread you forced me to start really thinking about it again. I agree with most that responded that the Heath dual glaze is all wrong and I have abandoned that idea for good. I also am sure I do not want a white or marble subway. I still think something in a pretty light gray would be good, but am open to other colors. I spent a long time on the Pratt and Larson website today and plan to visit a showroom that sells their tiles next week. I love my new kitchen but it feels incomplete without a bs....See MoreDeals I've found lately. What deals have you found? Hhhhmmmmmmm.....
Comments (75)I love a good revived thread. :-) My good deals are all from eBay this time. My desktop computer is not quite four years old, but since it gets a lot of use and we believe in "lifecycling" electronics I've been casually looking for a good deal on a somewhat high-end refurbished PC to replace it. Before I found anything, my computer quit. Just refused to turn on. I researched possible causes, and called in my expert: my son. The power supply was a common source of the problem, so I bought one on eBay for $20. Nope, that didn't do it, but we kept the replacement in the computer and held onto the old one as a spare. Next we replaced the motherboard ($70 on eBay). Yes! The computer works fine at this point, but we figured since the hard drive has been spinning all these years, why not replace it--or add another, which is what we did--rather than wait for it to fail? So I bought a 1TB SSD drive on Amazon ($100), and now have a "new computer" for under $200. Also, I've been wanting an L.L. Bean tan canvas "barn jacket" for a long time but was unwilling to pay over $100 for it. Even eBay prices on them aren't usually tempting, but this time I found one for under $20 including shipping. I love it! It really is "like new," and I look forward to wearing it when spring starts to make an appearance. All I need now are olive green "wellies" for our muddy season....See Moreaprilneverends
