Favorite Eyed and Edged Daylilies of 2020
I'm looking forward to seeing your favorite eyed and edged daylilies. This is one of my favorite categories. The next category will be edged without eyes.
The Tribble with Blue was my best performing eyed and edge cultivar this year. It had some scapes with bud counts in the 20s and rebloomed both in July and late October.
Sam Abell performed very well too, although no rebloom for me. Thanks to Laura for this one and The Tribble with Blue!
Sanford Intermezzo also had a fabulous season.
Blue Jay Tapestry was a good rebloomer.
Crazy Ivan had some gorgeous blooms.
Abilene Lillian is always a favorite

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoI have enjoyed your Sam Abell so much, I got it from Laura too. Sanford Intermezzo looks such a soft pretty pink, and while both your seedlings look great, I really like the last one.
Annabelle's Blush does great for me, not a tall one, but out of the foliage

Parrots of the Caribbean is one of my heavier ruffled ones. I love those ruffles, but most of the ones I have gotten have disappeared over the years
Rapid Eye Movement is another that is stretching for an edge, probable should not be in this group.

Debra, Abilene Lillian X Ruby Lipstick is magnificent! The edge and the markings on the sepals are outstanding. I hope it's got good stats.
Nancy, Dr Jules is a favorite around here.
Eyed and edged is my favorite category (except maybe teeth--eyed and edged with teeth even better). Bodacious Bite is a favorite here. The color is not as vibrant as we usually like, but this plant is all around fantastic--consistent flowers, good bud count, good fertility, winter hardy.
I almost put Bucklebury Ferry is the eyed no edge category, but it does have some edge. It's our intro and we had hoped that it would have the pollen parent's edge, but no such luck. It did out perform its published stats this past season.
Candy Bandit was planted in the fall of 2019 and bloomed twice this past season. I think it's going to be a good grower (it should be hardy--it's from Canada).
I am not sold on the plant habit of Catching Fire. It has nice flowers and has given us some pretty seedlings, but it hasn't performed as well as I had hoped.

Comments (31)This is my kind of category. My list could go on and on. Mantis, Abilene Lillian didn't do as well here as last year. Maybe it was the weather or maybe I loaded it down with too many pods. I am getting some beautiful seedlings out of it though. Here are my top contenders. Bodacious Bite is always super for us. It never has a bad hair day and it sets pods well. Change My Heart has also been very good. I have been using it for hybridizing too. Sam Abell is a great performer in our garden. We love the wide edge. Here are the runners up. Dr Jules Michael Vinkman is also a favorite. It comes up in the spring looking ratty (it's a semi-evergreen), but always shapes up. Chico Tim has done well for us. Many of Tim Bell's hybrids do not like our climate. Chico Tim does not increase very well, but blooms well every year and at registered height too. Hip Hop Music has not been in the garden very long, but so far it has done well. I include it because I love the flower. Eye, edge, and teeth--what more can you want? I had to include one more. I don't know if this will be a good performer. It has survived two winters so far--one cold and the other mild. I post it because it not only has edge on the petals, but a slight edge on the sepals along with a few teeth. This is Stellar Stitchery. I like the intense eye color and have been using this one in our red and white program. So far it has given us some nice seedlings. I'll post one seedling too. Comments (30)Nancy, I really like the bold color of your Rocky Top intro! It has a beautiful pattern on the sepals. Ocktoberfest is a great performer for me too. Wish my other Maryott daylilies grow as well. Kate, that's a really nice clump shot of Rasp. Candy! Signet, my favorites of yours are Linda Sierra, Hold Your Horses, and Rainbow Maker. Debra, Blazing Sadles and seedling are very nice! Brad, your Maleny Debutante is very pretty. That green throat really pops. The color combination reminds me of Ruby Lipstick. Comments (33)I like lavenders, although they tend to be more on the mauve side for me (but then I like mauve too). Way too many to comment on each but these stand out: Sherry: Why I don't have these yet is beyond me. There's a reason they are treasured daylilies from the past: Lavender Stardust and Trahlyta......Celeste: the Queen of purples and lavenders, if there's one UF that I still think about adding *(IIHR) it's Ocean Spirit. It looks good for eveyrone......Kate: I grew Ava Gardener and this Smith daylily had such wonderful form. Most Smith daylilies don't last for me, fading away in their pot after a couple of years, and she was no exception. For anyone else, she's a good one to trial...........Debra: Did I ask this question before? Royal Invitation has drawn my eye for 3 years now, but the bud count is lousy at 10-15. No More Tears has the same bud count but produces many more blooms for me then listed (and that's not rebloom, just regular bloom). So how does it do for you. 3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoCrimson Stories does ok here. We consider that good because it's a Lambertson and many of his don't like our climate at all. It has been a wonderful breeder for us too.
I wish Dave Chase Golden Glow had taller scapes to go along with the big flowers and bright color.
We are awaiting name approval for this one. This is Empire of Dawn and Dusk X Ruby Lipstick. I am sure everyone is getting sick of seeing its picture. The name if approved will be Cherry Pie a la Mode. I am reasonably sure the name will be approved since we have had it reserved for three years.
Fox Lake Ziconic is a daylily that is not in wide distribution. It is an intro from a friend of ours (Wally Zollman of Indianapolis). It's a very large flower.

3 years agoThe first three of these are relatively new to the garden so I don't really know how they will perform. This is Happy Place.
Jack's Mischief was planted just this past spring. We really like this flower and the best part is it was a bonus plant from the hybridizer. It is from Mike Grossmann.
Jammin's Lipstick Kisses didn't do well in its first location so we moved it and got some nice flowers. I am afraid it might be somewhat tender.
Moving Forward is a southern bred daylily that has done well for us.

3 years agoRed Eyed Queen is another southern that has done well for us. I love the large flat ruffled flowers.
Roi de Navare is one from Daniel Matton in Canada. It took a while to get settled in but was lovely this past season.
Small World TNT has taken forever to get gowing. I don't think it is going to increase well for us.
Snarl is a strange looking flower.

3 years agoSonoran Desert Rose is a good addition to the late garden. It's a great grower and quite fertile too.
The petals on Stoke the Fire recurved more than I personally like.
Westboure Frills and Thrills does not have the brightest color (it takes after its parent Fashion Police), but it's a good grower and is fertile.
Wickedly Wild and Wonderful doesn't perform as well as its published stats, but it blooms every year for us. It also blooms early so we are delighted to see it.

Here Lies Butch, hate the name, love the bloom. Big, fat edges that open perfectly every time.
Hemstitched was a bonus several years ago. It’s a great performer.
Hearts Abound, another good performer.
Storm Shelter is a nice bloom with an unusual light pinkish color.

Lollipop Kisses is another bonus that stayed in the garden. Has done well in a less than perfect place.
Mr Skeffington was a bonus, still being evaluated.
Peach Pizzazz is hard to photograph and get correct colors, this is close.
Woman at the Well has been here a short time, I like it so far.
Silky Skies, I’m not sure if I have this one in the right category. It’s the only Lambertson I have had that has done well here.
