Eyed and Edged Daylilies 2018
Post your best eyed and edged daylilies from last season, and any runners up here. The next category will be patterned daylilies.
Abilene Lillian made a nice clump last season and bloomed for a long time.
Billy the Kid was down on buds last year, but still made a striking clump.
Royal Cypher had a decent bud count and taller scapes, in a year when most daylilies here had short scapes.

5 years agoSilky Skies was a bonus plant for me, added as a single fan. It’s getting established here, big glorious blooms.
Forbidden Desires hit its stride this season.
here Lies Butch was added as a single fan, is getting established. The big, fat edges never hamper opening. Blooms are always flawless.

Comments (26)All the patterned daylilies posted are amazing. I especially like Bow Tie Affair and Stenciled Infusion. Karen, your seedlings are lovely. I hope they have good plants under those beautiful flowers. Here are my best patterns. Geometric Wizard continues to be one of my favorites. It does very well here for a southern-bred daylily. Curious Cutie is from the same hybridizer and I have often wondered if they share genetics. Its biggest fault is that it turns to mush in rain, but Geometric Wizard does not. I Don't Kid is doing well here. The third flower in the background is Purple Maze which is very similar in looks. I love the delicate coloring on Ink and Pink. Four Beasts in One is not well established yet, but I like the looks of it. Oceans Eleven has been in the garden for many years. I love the eye. It often has a metallic look. Here is Get Jiggy in our garden. This is the best pattern we have seen, but we haven't seen it often. Of course, if patterns really show best in cooler weather, we aren't going to see many in west central Indiana. I know I have gone over my limit, but I have to post a pattern we found in a seedling. Comments (18)Cosmic Kaleidoscope is one I will just enjoy looking at, as I have not seen convincing Northern reports on it. I see that Belle Isle Sentry is a Moonlit Masquerade kid. Priscilla's Rainbow is lovely. Mount Herman Intrigue certainly calls attention. Roman Cohort deserves attention as it always has some nice blooms here. Recently divided, which may account for fewer buds. At 9:30 a.m., Houzz is not permitting any more pictures. Finally got another one. Paradise Bar and Grill took a good picture, but still fairly new in the garden. The Dream Society had this crisp late bloom. But scapes were somewhat shorter this year and may never be the registered height. Comments (23)I've been absent for a few days. My computer crashed and it's so much more difficult using my backup computer, which is just a tablet with a keyboard. We love eyes but in looking through my pictures, most of ours have edges too. Here are a few I found. I am beginning to love many of Jamie Gossard's small diploid ufs. This is Pixie Dragon. This is Greywood's Roseberry Sorbet. It hasn't been here long, but it looks like it is a nice plant. Heavenly Bengal Tiger is not very tall nor is the flower large, but it's a reliable performer. 5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoSherry - That should have been what the last category was, but I posted the wrong photos with that title. Let's do Eyed no Edge after patterns. All three of yours are pretty, but Silky Skies really grabs me.
Here's another of my runners up. Born in California clumped up fast, bloomed well and also rebloomed. The only reason it's not in my top three is because the first five or six blooms were splotchy.

5 years agoI agree that Abilene Lillian is a gorgeous daylily. I have it and I look forward to seeing its blooms every year. It never fails to deliver beautiful flowers. I love this daylily.
My top performers this year are Stenciled Infusion

Purify My Heart
Runners Up are Dynamic Glow which produced beautiful glowing flowers and even rebloomed but it was killed by rot due to persistent rainy weather.
Catch a Star - such pretty flowers but bloomed below foliage
Pretty seedling out of Gilded Glory X Latin Serenade that rebloomed.

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoFor some reason, Purify My Heart has been off its stride for a few years. I know that Karen has posted pictures of it with wonderful scape (height and bud count). Not here recently though.
Forbidden Desires seems to have decent bud count. How has its vigor been, Sherry? Of course, last year here was a year of unexpected vigor for many evergreens. Here Lies Butch is an attractive flower. I see it has been tissue cultured. I don't know how she came up with the name; for some, I suppose, it is a positive thought that the dead help produce a cycle of vegetative life.

Ruby Storm is indeed a good Northern plant.
Although it was not as good as last year, Ashton's Giggles is a favorite for the large flower and bluish eye. (Took me a long time to think of this name. Fibromyalgia takes its toll.) Scapes were a bit shorter this year.
Cardinal Explosion is vigorous and bold. Also takes a good picture (perhaps better than reality).Star Lord looks promising.
When You Get to Asheville looks pretty good.
Kingdom Without End was an excellent performer.Jessica Lynn Bell looked very good here, but don't know if that was a quirk of the winter that many evergreens seemed to like.

5 years agoLots of beautiful ones, too many to single any out except.... INCENDIARY! What a beauty.
I don't have a lot in this category, but I do have several that bloom well.
Bold Vision is an early, good bloomer.
Ciel D'or bright, well budded & lots of scapes even in a not-so-ideal spot.
Abundant Joy, one of my daughter's favorites.

5 years agoHere's another one I forgot about: Kiss of Paradise. It's original scapes were short low budded, but the rebloom scape redeemed it in height and buds.

5 years agoI like Arnold's Daughter a lot. Abilene Lillian is one I've considered, but Nancy Watson has reported it as somewhat iffy. I wonder how it performed for her this year.
This is such a rich category that I feel compelled to add a few more.
Mexicali Blues is one I like a lot. Every bloom is not as good as this one, but this year they looked pretty good. Will see in the future (second year in the ground).
JP Moneybags does well here.I showed The Band Played On earlier, but it deserves another show. Will not astound with bud count (like many Stamiles), but has been very reliable here.
One that I hope performs well in the ground is Inscribed On My Heart.

HOT SEAT: I love this flower. It is so striking in the garden. I just wish it was a bit bigger of a bloom.
VISION SEEKER: Great looking plant. Crossed it with RUBY STORM
RUBY STORM: Great northern plant.

CIRCUS PERFORMER: This is the first year that I was able to accurately capture the color.
FACE PAINT: Great plant.
LEDGEWOODS TONY LIKES IT: The contrast of the eye with the petal is striking in the garden. The colors are crisp.
I agree with MANTIS about THE BANDS PLAYS ON not being a producer of many buds. The blooms are certainly very nice.

After the first year or two, Face Paint has not performed well here, but I have kept it. Some Stamiles can be finicky.
Here is Works for Me, very reliable.
Special Candy took a long time to establish, but looked good last year (but limited bud count).

MOSES IN THE BULLRUSHES: The biggest fault with this one is that it blooms lower than the foliage. The foliage does not interfere with the blooms as the foliage falls away from the scape.
LIGHT OF THE WORLD: Great all around plant.
ROCK SOLID: All around good plant as well.

5 years agoRock Solid has also been used a lot in hybridizing, though not all its progeny are "rock" hardy.
Here is Rock Candy, which looked pretty good this summer. Same vigorous growth habit.
A promising eyed and edged (such a big category) is Alpha and Omega:

5 years agoMantis is right-this is indeed a rich category as evidenced by all the lovely photos above. Here are some of mine.
Thomas Tew. Pretty sure everyone who has read my posts knew this one was coming from me. This has been an outstanding lily for me. And I love these blooms.
Sabine Baur-similar coloration, but different form. This is one I forgot I had, but it really performed well this year, drawing my attention to it!
Pointed Perfection. The more this one bloomed, the more I liked it.
El Desperado. Sorry, I cheated with this photo. It is from last year. The deer ate most of the buds this year but this one is indefatigable when it gets established.

Pandora's Treasure. An old but reliable bloomer year after year.
Sunday River. Probably should have been in top three. It rebloomed three times into September.
Purple Sombrero. Did not edge on first blooms. But then looked lovely with edges on the rest.
And the lovely Aslan.
Rodelinda. Blooms low in foliage so needs to be in a front border. Blooms are almost always perfect.

Mantis, Abilene Lillian didn't do as well here as last year. Maybe it was the weather or maybe I loaded it down with too many pods. I am getting some beautiful seedlings out of it though.
Here are my top contenders.
Bodacious Bite is always super for us. It never has a bad hair day and it sets pods well.
Change My Heart has also been very good. I have been using it for hybridizing too.
Sam Abell is a great performer in our garden. We love the wide edge.
Here are the runners up.Dr Jules Michael Vinkman is also a favorite. It comes up in the spring looking ratty (it's a semi-evergreen), but always shapes up.
Chico Tim has done well for us. Many of Tim Bell's hybrids do not like our climate. Chico Tim does not increase very well, but blooms well every year and at registered height too.
Hip Hop Music has not been in the garden very long, but so far it has done well. I include it because I love the flower. Eye, edge, and teeth--what more can you want?
I had to include one more. I don't know if this will be a good performer. It has survived two winters so far--one cold and the other mild. I post it because it not only has edge on the petals, but a slight edge on the sepals along with a few teeth. This is Stellar Stitchery. I like the intense eye color and have been using this one in our red and white program. So far it has given us some nice seedlings.
I'll post one seedling too. This is Empire of Dawn and Dusk X Ruby Lipstick. We hope it will be an introduction in 2020 or 21.
