Is bigger always better? ;-}
Comments (13)For me it depends on so many things that can vary day to day. I bought roses in large pots as I know they need every advantage in a cold climate and I was impatient for blooms. They were in bloom when I got them at the end of June on sale and continued without a pause until well after freeze-up so it was worth it. Plants that are new to me I sometimes buy in small pots - got my Walker's Low in a 5" pot and it took off unbelievably, should have got 6, and will get more next year. If I want/need a lot of a certain type of plant such as the lavender I bought in a small flat of plugs as they were very inexpensive. They are also marginal here so I haven't lost much if only half survive. For shrubs or trees I like to buy in larger pots. And I prefer they not be too root bound as it's just an extra stress for the plant. If I'm paying the big bucks for a potted tree I want it in very good condition. I'm usually very frugal but it does depend on how desirable the plant is to me and how nurturing I'm feeling at the time. I've babied plants for decades so sometimes don't feel like taking on more. But every year do buy a few I know need it. Overall I buy more small potted plants than large simply because they are a better buy and I can wait for them to grow....See MoreMake me feel better, show me something ugly

Comments (46)Putting a "d" in it makes it sounds more like a country than a name to me. Marilyn, love your daughters name. There was a family I knew growing up that all the childrens middle names were the mother's maiden name. Both boys and girls. It helped that the mother had a decent maiden name, Vincent. I remember one of the daughter's names being Alice. I thought it was pretty cool. A tribute to Mom's former name without having to hyphenate anything. I still vote for Baen. It's a cool name but not off the wall....See MoreDo you ever feel guilty and how do you get over it?
Comments (23)Thank you all for your advice and pictures. I just LOVE them! After a weekend of being laid up again (fell off a machine at the gym and totally wrecked my back but am finally feeling a bit better now), I am hopingto get out there and prune this coming three day (can you say YEA!) weekend! Still on the fence about my climber as she is throwing out all sorts of laterals right now so this could be a good bloom year unlike prior years. She may have just had to have more time to come into her own. However, I am seeing that there are all sorts of little oak trees and other plants coming up through my rose bushes due to the mulch and birds. UGH! I may have lost my Sharifa Asma because of it if I can't pull them out. I have a feeling my garden is going to be very sparse this year due to a bunch of new roses going in to replace my old ones. Evelyn and Ambridge are reverting back to rootstock, so out they go. I have oak trees growing up in my Sharifa Asma as well as Evelyn, Mary Webb and now one of my Brother Cadfaels! I also have another unidentified bush growing up in my Peach Blossom. So it looks like I pretty much get to start from scratch all over again. Looks like an expensive year!...See MoreAnnie Deighnaugh
