Pros/ cons to have glass panels to the curb or build a knee wall?

I'm alone in this, but I don't like glass panels anymore. 15 years ago, I redid all 5 of the full bathrooms in my first house, putting in glass doors/enclosures. When we moved here 10 years ago, I did it again in all but one of our bathrooms here. When we redid Maine four years ago, I didn't use any shower glass. I love shower curtains, esp in an old home. I'm tired of glass and it never looks period to me. My 2 cents. I think it is really useful if a bathroom is small, to make it less claustrophobic. But if one has space, I'd forego glass.

Just a thought, Peppa, we had friends who recently totally redid their bathroom. They installed a curbless shower. I now wish I had a curbless shower. They also put in a heated floor in the bathroom - unusual for our climate but such a wonderful luxury.

I’m with Mtn insofar as I’ve never met a glass panel shower that didn’t eventually leak. I opted for sliding class doors for our 8x5 bathroom and we have a shower curtain for our j-corner-tub in the other one.

I don't like fully opened showers either. During our recent remodel, the master bath got a glass shower door, but the rest is tiles floor to ceiling. DD1 wanted a large glass opening/wall on the 4th side.

DD2 (a few houses ago) did a large corner shower with marble curbs/glass to curb. Looked nice and she liked. Two walls tile, two glass. Here is a link. I bought small marble pencil tile at Lowe's for edge and an accent near shower floor on two walls. In DD2's current home, she also did a master bath remodel and use the same marble pencil tile.

YMMV. I made a big fuss about needing heated floors on our first floor (where our master suite is). I'm embarrassed to admit that I cannot recall ever turning them on. I envisioned wanting them warm first thing in the morning, But it's just not something that occurs to me, and unless i left them on or used a timer, they would need time to warm up. I recommend these:

Curbless showers looks sleek, but after putting them in our BA here, I used curbs in all 3 newly built BA in Maine. Unless you have some slope, curbless is just a mess IME.

I’m getting tired of glass as well. I don’t hate the look but hate having to clean it everyday. Also, that clear plastic (?) line water stopper thingy on glass door bottom is hard to keep looking nice. Not sure what to do with it after five years. Guess one calls the glass enclosure company, they take door off, put new clear plastic/rubbery stopper thingy back on? It gets mold and grunge up into the interior grooves . Ewww

😂 yes, that thingie!!!! I think I prefer a closed off shower myself. my last shower just had glass door w the clear plastic thingie- and I kept the shower spotless & still had spots & gunk on thingie.

Going cut less would be easier as far as edging/bull nose pieces. This is upstairs & there is a curb less ADA bath downstairs.

Got this large 32 x32 sample yesterday. Not sure if I really want to go that big. Less grout.....but not sure if really “timeless”. Thinking about 12 x24 tile.

That's a very pretty bathroom.

Though if I were building I would definitely seriously consider a curbless shower in case you need to get a wheelchair or other device in and out with you.

Someone I know who uses a wheelchair did a curbless shower and put in a shower rod and curtain. Best of both worlds for her. She found the room too drafty compared to an enclosed space. She also opted for heated floors and does use them to further warm up the open space.

Wow I just asked about curbless showers on Google and there's tons of information. There are lots of videos as well. Not that I would DIY personally.

Just as an aside when I had glass I actually hung shower curtains on them. The reason I did that was because of the gross grunge that justTerriLynn is talking about. I weighted the bottom of my shower curtain and used sticky backed magnets to keep it nice and straight and even at the bottom. Surprisingly the magnets lasted quite a while Then I would periodically take the shower curtain off and wash it as usual.

Same abt heated floors..... I really don’t like to walk barefoot- so, it’s either flip flops of Ugg loafers in the winter. I am thinking about a built in towel warmer thou!

You have the space to make it great. Hint - be sure there is enough room between the tub and the wall to be able to clean that area easily and throughly.

They don't have to remove the shower door to replace the clear plastic water stopper thingy on the bottom. Only open the door. I've found a spare toothbrush handy to clean ours.

Yes,yes to a heated towel rack! I had one in my last house and I loved it. I have never had the right spot for it here.

Just terrilynn-Our plastic thing at the bottom slides offs. I slide it off carefully and use vinegar-soaked paper towels to clean it. Once it’s off, you can clean the glass that it fits over.

You must have a different thingy. Ours is affixed to the tile floor.

Our plastic water stopper also slides off the glass, making it easy to clean. If you have a shower curtain instead of glass, I guess you have to have a much higher curb on the shower. Otherwise, the curtain has to come to the floor to prevent splash out.

I LOVE our heated towel warmer. I didn't think we'd use it during the summer, but it always feel good to wrap yourself in a warm towel. We use it year round.

We recently underwent a master bath reno and after much back and forth finally opted for a knee wall. It is the same depth as the cabinets and we had a niche built into it so our toiletries are hidden from view. There is space for hooks to hold a washcloth, squeegie, and microfiber cloth, all of which are out of sight. With a knee wall, you can put your shower controls on the wall and not have to walk or reach into the shower. You can also install hooks or a shower niche in the knee wall and a towel bar on the outside.

If the shower is wide, you can put a waist-high narrow ledge the full length of the back wall to hold shampoo bottles, etc. It's easier to clean than a niche.

Good to know about the towel warmer! I found one at Costco, very reasonably priced- so going for it!

The more I think about it- I want to wall off the shower. Our last shower had 2 shower heads on opposite walls, rain head in ceiling(never used), and hand held. Bench along the back wall. Just had a frameless glass door. I liked feeling cocooned in the shower & think I’d feel exposed w 2 sides glass. Plus a pain to keep water spots.

Yeah, i fell for the rain head thing too. Thank goodness only as a secondary or tertiary choice. I also found, oddly, that rain heads cool the water off IYKWIM. And they don't fit well with ideals of water conservation, for sure! I like "normal' heads plus a handheld.

Sorry have no idea the perfect distance. Just know that my little nieces splash in their tub and and their mother is sorry she ever went with a freestanding. Because it’s so hard to clean behind it.

I have 2 free standing tubs here and 2 in Maine. All only far enough from the wall to accommodate pipes, ie 6-7"? Wouldn't a long handled floppy mop do it?

I have both the heated floor with a timer, and a heated towel bar.

I love them both. I'm a bare footer and the floor is lusciously warm when I get up in the a.m. and again when I get ready for bed in the p.m. Only thing is, the electrician didn't run it quite wide enough as there's none under the toe kick, and when you stand at the sink, you really notice the difference.

We purposely designed our bath to be smaller as we like it warm when we shower, so this way the whole room heats up between the floor and the towel bar and the warm water in the shower. Makes drying off in the winter so much more comfortable.

I do have glass surround, but from shoulder height up to the ceiling (it's a steam shower too). It lets a lot more light in that way. The glass door swings both in and out. In after showering so it dries inside and out of the way. Out so we can reach the controls without getting wet.

I'm skeeved out by too many attacking shower curtains in hotels or curtains that get moldy. In the old house, we had sliding doors, but they were designed in the who knows when and the doors slid in tracks that you could never get clean. I think the newer ones just use brackets to keep the doors straight so that is no longer a problem. I wanted to change the doors out at the old house, but were scared it would destroy the tiles too which were a discontinued color, so we left it to the new owners to deal with.

Another thing that annoys me is, in watching these house shows on tv, is how many times the bathroom door swings open into the glass shower door with no stoppers! Yikes! I can just imagine the door knob going through the glass...not pretty!
