Odd shaped living room layout/decor

Hi,

We are in the process of a whole house renovation of our modern two bed bungalow. What is causing me great difficulty is how to furnish and layout our very odd hexagonal-shaped living room. To be clear we do not currently have any furniture pieces that we are committed to using in the room and all furniture would be purchased new for same. The main features of the room are two large sliding French doors, one leading out to the garden and the other out into an internal courtyard garden. Flooring is a white and grey marble, which is obviously staying. We do not own a TV and I am in no mind to rush out and buy one for the meantime but we may occasionally project movies etc on one of the walls (red arrow on floorplan). The two black arrows with dashed lines is in fact one large door out to the garden, not two windows. Above the living room is the dining area, with kitchen beyond. Main entrance into the room indicated by the black arrow. Please find attached the floor plan and a few photos from different angles. As far as decor, currently I am thinking of painting the living and dining room in quite a strong grey colour as I feel with the size of the rooms and quality of natural light that comes in, that the room can take it, but suggestions very welcome.

Please help, especially with any photos/layout plans of similar shaped rooms.

p.s. My design style is probably somewhere in the transitional and mid-century modern look with a touch of eclectic.

Don't know what the heck those numbers mean on the floor plan. You'll probably have to "float" the seating arrangement in the middle of the room. A couch will be in the middle, with the back of it hugging the straight dash line. To either side of it (allowing of course for room to get around), will be an upholstered chair. Add curtains, side tables, art, rug etc. See if you can get local art. Art is a very personal thing. Take your time and get pieces you love. Carefully consider the amount of space you have to move around. I personally like more space than stuff, but that's me. How many people do you usually have sitting in this room? If you entertain a lot, consider additional seating with poofs and/or mini ottomans that people can sit on. Another option for extra seating is putting slightly upholstered straight back chairs in the corner for company. I'm personally not keen on Bobs furniture - I'm just giving you a general idea. I worked in customer service for many years. If you get a nt so helpful person - ask for someone else or go to a different store. In my opinion, there's no excuse for bad customer service.

Thank you for the prompt response, Elaine. Yes, just to clarify, the room dimensions are given in centimetres. We don't generally entertain large crowds at a given time. Just maybe 6-8 people in the room at any one time, though this may change so the idea of occasional seating would be a wise addition. Would you advocate a sectional sofa as the main piece or a standard 4 seater sofa?

I have also used Sherwin-Williams paints in a past project, where I painted the living room 'Requisite grey' hence why I was leaning towards similar again. I want quite a laidback, cozy but elegant vibe in the room and would appreciate your input as to what pallets would invoke that.

From your description, I'm not clear on the layout at all...when you say put the tv in the small back room are you talking about the area in this room by the sliding doors? A sketch of the room with dimensions would be helpful, esp for you as you try to lay out furniture and need to decide what fits and what doesn't. I know you said you want a more formal area for when you host guests, but I think, given the toddler, you should start with function first. IMO, a house should give the most space to the maximum utilization. So if you will be needing play space and tv space which will be used on a daily basis, then that should take priority over a formal seating area which may be used less frequently. Rather, there are ways of combining both functions...keeping a play area with toy storage, perhaps by the slider and then incorporating seating and family TV time and entertaining around the fireplace. Regarding the windows, I would suggest that you treat the lower windows as you wish and ignore the upper windows. The vaulting in the ceiling has some odd shapes and some of the window placement is awkward, so I would ignore them ... pretend there is line going around the room where the lower ceiling is and don't decorate above it.

I have a similar angled fireplace. If you're not wedded to the TV over the fireplace, I would suggest putting it next to the fireplace and angling your furniture around the TV. That's the way mine is. You can see the TV face on from some pieces of furniture, and the fireplace face on from others, but all can see the TV and fireplace. I use my fireplace daily in the winter so don't want a TV over it, it gets too hot up there. I would advice against a sectional. You can get the utility of a sectional from a couch and a lounge chair or two. I'd be more apt to angle the couch where the chairs are in your picture. A floor drawing would probably help with furniture placement. I think you could totally redo the room to match your inspiration picture, keeping the wall color unless you really want a dramatic change. I love the curtains in the inspiration photo! Your house is open concept like mine. Hard to figure out whether to repaint or not, because once you start with one room, it snowballs to how that affects the other rooms. You could always do one wall another color like the current owners have in the photo. Wish I knew what that color was in your inspiration photo. Browns and tans are the worst for me as far as choosing the right one. I burned up a lot of cash in sample paints when I moved into my new house. What about something like this to get you started. The sofa has a sofa table behind it. The console is on the wall and a TV would be on it or above it. The 2 chairs would be between the two rooms, but mainly in the other room. The windows have been replaced with your french door.

I have another option to consider. This is quick sketch so if you like I can do a cleaner version tomorrow This provides clean walkway behind sofa and I put a round ottoman in space across from piano for extra seating. A swivel chair allows for little conversation spot on that end of room. I also put narrow demi line table near sliders so there is a set down space for bringing drinks and grilling items in and out from patio. Sorry it is so dark. I can lighten up tomorrow. Enjoy!
