Odd Shaped Living Room Layout Help

Hi All!

My husband and I bought our first home and are struggling with the layout of the downstairs. It used to be two small rooms, but a wall was knocked out between both rooms creating a bigger living space. We are struggling with where to put a couch and TV. We want it to be as cozy (yet pretty/working for the space) as possible. We were thinking a TV centered on the "big" wall, but if we center a couch on the half it's going to jut out.

On the other side of the open space, it is our dining room. Any help would be so appreciated!

We eventually would like to French doors to go out to our patio where the 2 back windows are.

Something like this.... Furniture focused on the fireplace not on the walls. Float sofa and chairs. There are several ways to place the furniture without having it against the walls.

If it was just my husband and I it would be fine the way it is. with children it’s a huge safety issue because if they stand on the couch they can go down the stairs. It’s driving me crazy to say the least. I feel others might look at the room differently than I would and would have a better idea

I have another option to consider. This is quick sketch so if you like I can do a cleaner version tomorrow This provides clean walkway behind sofa and I put a round ottoman in space across from piano for extra seating. A swivel chair allows for little conversation spot on that end of room. I also put narrow demi line table near sliders so there is a set down space for bringing drinks and grilling items in and out from patio. Sorry it is so dark. I can lighten up tomorrow. Enjoy!

So I would have you cable outlet moved so you can put you tv in that corner area by the bathroom. Either put the tv on an articulating arm that you can pull out and turn toward the seating area or just angle the tv in the corner. To me, built-ins would be the way to go vs a tv stand/console. I also created another seating area which l linked together by doing a “wall” of drapery panels. With the sectional on the long wall, it gives you a nice focal point as you enter the home.

What about something like this to get you started. The sofa has a sofa table behind it. The console is on the wall and a TV would be on it or above it. The 2 chairs would be between the two rooms, but mainly in the other room. The windows have been replaced with your french door.
