How high is your under cabinet range hood?

I am ordering my cabinets. I will have a gas cooktop and a Zephyr under cabinet hood. Zephyr specs say it should be 24 to 32 inches. Cabinet guy suggested the distance should be 32. May I have your advice?

32. 24 is too low.

Some folks have an OTR MW mounted at 24 and its hard to see what is going on on the cooktop. Usually an OTR MW doesnt have a good draw. "Real" hoods can pull from a higher position

You need to express this as the distance between the cooktop and the bottom of the hood. Otherwise there will be confusion and potential errors. The reason is that sometimes the hoods themselves are 9” tall, sometimes they’re 24” tall, or any other conceivable height. So the hoods will be hung at different heights depending on how tall they are. Also depending on the cabinetry if they are being hung from cabinetry. Or depending on the ceiling height if hung from the ceiling. That is why you need to express where the hood is hung in terms of distance from cooktop to bottom of hood. That distance needs to be between 30” and 36” depending on your preference, and what works for you within that distance.

If Zephyr is specifying 24” distance, that usually means the hood has low cfms and Zephyr wants it hung lower than normal or it won’t be able to exhaust anything.

Don’t worry about hitting your head on the hood (in case that question comes up). The brain learns where the hood is within a couple times of standing in front of it, and you won’t hit your head.

If you look at the Modern-Aire site, they have several shapes where the front tapers at the top to the depth of an upper cabinet, and the sides are straight so as to butt up to, and cover, the yellow cabinet sides you mentioned. Their typical sizes are 18" and 30" high, but you could get a 24" custom one if your budget allows. Or you could get an 18" and have a box made for above it to cover that area and to which you could attach replacement moulding. The box could be made of either wood matching your moulding or sheetrock. Vent-a-hood has a stainless direct replacement if you decide to stick with the same size you now have. Mine is about 70" from the floor, 31.25" from the top of the grates. I carried a little paper tape measure in my wallet (Ikea) so that it was always with me and measured a gazillion hoods in friends' homes, model homes, big box stores, and kitchen showrooms over a period of a week or two. My cabinet surround is 48" wide (though the baffles are really only 40" wide) over a 36" cooktop and I'm really happy with the sizing. You are right to notice that what people do for aesthetic reasons is several inches different than what manufacturers recommend for effectiveness. Venting efficacy is influenced by hood height but also by capture area, cfms, and whether or not you turn on the hood before you start cooking.

My point was that I couldn't imagine an everyday cook being comfortable with any obstruction, like a hook or micro, only 18" above the cooktop. I wouldn't have it, and neither my mom nor grandmoms had to deal with it either. But they are long gone and no one is designing kitchens for them or the way they cooked. There is another thread reminding us that not everyone with whom we deal is a GW colleague. Very few of the greater public are TKO like many of us. Most cannot afford to be. Many of the rest cannot imagine why one would care to spend money on high end appliances, when take-out is cheap and convenient. There are several generations younger than me who think warming a tin of soup is "cooking". This greater public are the demographic that is now driving mainstream kitchen and appliance design (who else needs a "chicken nugget" setting on their range?). That is probably why the OP's Broan was recommended to hang 18"-24" above the cooktop. It wasn't targeted to a GW TKO consumer.

The ducting must be installed based on the specs of the hood you purchase. And the size of the ducting must comply with the requirements for the hood. Most of the "professional" hoods seem to require 8" solid (NOT flex) ducting). Pic our your hood, determine the height off the range it will be (usually 30") and then figure out where the ducting must come to.
