Can I hang a pendant from a structural beam?
Comments (5)Lastly, I should mention that I'm not doing this work myself, there will be a licensed electrician involved, but I have to give the electrician a lighting plan this week. If I can't hang pendants from the beam, I'll either have to specify hanging them from the ceiling on either side (which DH thinks is doofy) or build out the beam creating a space in which to put in narrow recessed low voltage lights (which DH wants, but I think it'll make the beam look massive -- and hate it when he gets his way!) Anyway, thanks in advance for the electrical advice and any marital counseling you might choose to send my way!...See MoreLower ceiling in kitchen or exposed beams?
Comments (3)Unfortunately the walls of our old kitchen are still up which prohibits me showing the detail I mean but I can show you on the floor plans.... to be clear everything in the picture will be open plan, so beam 1 and 2 go right through the middle of the ceiling above the island.......See MoreTwo columns and a beam to support load bearing beam?oun
Comments (6)You need a structural engineer. Posts need footings. You’ll need to dig footings. Steel is stronger than glue lam, and smaller. It will not need intermediate support if designed correctly. Steel is always the answer. Along with a work crew that has experience with it. NOT DIYable. Structural work is like racing. How much you want it to be invisible depends on how much money you have. How fast do you want to go? Pony it up. A 300K level remodel is going to bleed it at every opportunity. This is where you need the experienced architect and GC and let them do their jobs....See MoreAdvice for hiding kitchen exhaust ductwork in a log home.
Comments (11)I would vent to the outside above the window but I am more of a function over form sort of person. Paint the vent to match the color of the house. A down draft vent was not going to cut it with our range and how we cook. We have log house. Our hood vents out the roof and is at the front of the house. No way around it. We painted the vent green to help it blend in a little better with the roof. We also have a satellite dish on the front of the house. Not thrilled about it but we had no other choice unless we wanted it on the roof at the front of the house which we did not. Our range is on an outside wall and cabinets cover the ductwork that goes up through the roof....See MoreJason Hays
