Parquet must be banished?

About to move into a nyc apt with perfectly refinished light oak parquet floors. Now is the time to decide whether to replace them. Seems like here some consider parquet a total nonstarter. During our apt search we actually saw units where it had been covered with vinyl!

Is parquet really this objectionable? Up there with the old Formica countertops and peach bath fixtures? Or can my tasteful wool rugs, art, and (not-extreme) MCM furniture redeem it? Will be painting and doing kitchen and bath updates and am happy to make my money go as far as possible.

Not interested in staining the parquet dark to disguise it. Do not like that look.

I see in Houzz discussions from 8 years ago there were predictions parquet was about to be in again. That doesn’t seem to have happened! I don’t care about being in. I just don’t want to be horrifically out.
