Nooooo! If the parquet floors are in good shape, I'd keep them! I find them rather beautiful, personally.

They have that Old New York charm which I think is classic and stunning.

We renovated. NYC apt and although we had to get rid of the floors, we tried to keep the rest of the renovation in lines with the Art Deco building.

I think parquet is timeless. Enjoy it and consider yourself lucky!

Anything that is a current "trend" will soon be "out"....forget what's trending, go with the classic good taste....parquet floors, good old oak is classic. Don't mess with it.

Parquet as you describe it would be amazing and timeless. It just cost a client of mine $10,000 to put this in their house and it is stunning. Very popular in Paris in all the expensive apartments and dwellings! Keep it. Enhance with beautiful rugs!

It really only matters if it is a non-starter for you. I think they are lovely.

Thanks everybody! You are all so helpful and encouraging! Just to clarify, these floors are in excellent shape and a nice blond color (not orange) but we are not talking Versailles here haha. This is an 80s condo with good space and location. I’m personally fine with the floors and am not buying as an investment but don’t want to drop the ball on something that would be basic to the 21st century, if that makes sense...

I adore parquet floors!

When we bought our NYC apartment, the parquet floors were polished an beautiful (I think anyway)- a richer/darker brown color. I wouldn't replace them. Oddly, the kids' bedroom had carpet over parquet. We sanded and re-stained it a lighter shade (it was clearly added at a different time because the size of the squares and type of wood were different).

My parents had a house built in 1984 and put parquet everywhere...I never liked it. So busy...but sounds like I'm the minority here.

It depends. The term parquet could be used to describe any pattern from the cheapest 6" squares up to an elaborate French classic or something in the Hermitage.

Right. We are def not in St Petersburg here. ;-) That said, color not offensive and condition looks very good to me. Just not sure worth redoing from the POV of my budget and sustainability. But if it is generally seen as appalling, I want to know that.

My guess is this the cheap crap from HD years ago ans not in the least worth keeping. We chose it for cheap fix in rental that the landlord just wanted to cover asbestos tile. I guess if you want to save money than big rugs but honeasly I would cover it all with vinyl plank in a nice wood tome and get the kind that is just planks no under part to add too much thickness to the floor.

Interesting. I wouldn’t want to see it in a house either. This floor is all over nyc though. It’s dated, but is it disastrous? ;-) I prefer plank flooring but am making choices as I renovate in a city where home values are a little shaky given the COVID exodus.

What is out of fashion: the vinyl tile and sheet vinyl patterns that looked like real wood parquet. Real wood parquet is a classic.

That's among the cheaper parquets that's been offered but it makes a perfectly serviceable floor. It's what I call a background floor. It serves as a backdrop that doesn't compete with other decorating elements. Some people do hate it while a minority think it's great. If you don't hate it, you're not going to be selling soon, and it's in good shape, I'd say to leave it.

Are you planning on many rugs such that spending $$ to replace is not worth it. It’s a little orange for my taste but looks fine in condition. Cost to sand and stain? Here’s a glimpse of my NYC parquet floors- I opted to keep them

FYI, it's likely your parquet is 5/16" thick. If it's solid it can withstand multiple refinishings. If it's t&g it can only be resanded once.

@Gcubed I kept it! Important to dh, in perfect condition, a sustainable choice, and don’t tell anybody but I think it looks quite decent. 😂 My last apt had parquet stained chocolate, which was a royal pain because it was a dust magnet. This reflects the light in this very bright space.
