Monstera's leaf got damaged, should I cut it off?

Hello Houzz community!

This beautiful vase traveled on an airplane and ended up with a leaf damaged (around 2 months ago), should I cut it off to avoid further deterioration of the plant? If so, what is the right way to do it?

Overall the plant is healthy, but I noticed that the new leaves showing up are yellow and with brown spots as you can see in the pics. I don't know if it's the climate change from NYC to Miami or the watering routine, but would love to get some insights on what to do about it and if I should cut off the yellow leaves.

The plant is on a pot with a drainage hole, and I usually let the water drain to put it back in the vase. It's located in a very bright living room but no direct sunlight.

i dont really see the damaged leaf as threat to the whole ... since it was what we call...'mechanical' damage' ... aka physical ... rather than disease or bug related ...

big city name location .. is it spring or fall ...???

looks like a pretty big plant in a small pot.. you might need to repot it ...

when was the flight .. how long have you had it home ... oh i see.. about 2 months ... it should be over that stress ... so if its the right time of year.. we ought to think about the repotting ....

there is a houseplant forum .... where this should be a very common plant ... for future reference ...

i would cut this leaf down to about 6 inches of stalk.. and let it naturally dry.. and in a few months.. the remnant should pull off easily ..

i would ignore the other slight browning ... just insure proper watering .. let it near dry between waterings ... how often that is.. may depend on how you heat your house.. if its winter ... and where you are ... e.g. in my MI ... ambient humidity is a problem in the dead of winter.. with the forced air furnace running what seems constantly ...

this is a very easy plant to have... lets try not to kill it with too much love ...

dont forget.. if you are repotting. the most important thing in the pot.. is the media... not the plant.. so get some good stuff ... it will be worth the small extra cost ...

Hi Ken, thank you for the tips. I haven't seen a houseplant forum but will look for it next time.

I'm in Miami, FL now, it is Fall but right now it's 75F. I'll cut ithe leaf down like you said and will get a bigger pot to repot it. The new leaves are big and the plant is getting heavier. Thanks again!

amethystt: The life of your new blackberry plant is not in the existing stem or the leaves that are on it. The most you might be able to expect from the existing stem would be a few blackberries next season. Hardly worth considering. The real future of your plant lies in its roots and crown. If they are alive, they should send up new growth, though it may take them some time to do so. Blackberries are biennials, so when new canes grow up they will fruit in the following season. August is not the best time to be transplanting blackberries, although in your particular climate you may be able to get away with it. Just a few weeks ago I was asking similar question on another forum, but my newly planted (fall 2015 ) plants have quite a few buds - 2 to 7 with everything in between in fact on different ones. One bud is perfectly fine, a few one are fine as well, just cut the flowers off right after they are done so they do not produce seed. I previously had plants with as many as 3 and they were fine afterwards. I got rid of some of my buds by the way - the most numerous ones.

Agree with laceyvail - no sealing! That is not & has not been a recommended practice on a live tree for a long time. ! I disagree with ken_adrian only because if you cut this limb off there’s not much tree left as looks like major branches & limbs coming out. In that case you may as well take out whole tree.. Just wait until spring to see if that section leafs out. As long as there is cambium left unharmed to feed the branches left on that tree limb it has good chance. I had a Bloodgood Japanese maple tree that had the back 1/3 of it - a major branch like yours - ripped off in a storm when a huge Douglas Fir limb fell on it. The tear was easily as large as yours looks.. I left it alone - easy to do as the damaged side not visible from most of my yard. That ripped section weeped & seeped sap every spring for a few years but that tree did heal itself & put out other new limbs above & below the tear. I no longer own that house but my old neighbors have sent me pictures of its majestic fall colors as proof that it lives on in good health. So, my advice is - wait until spring to assess, don’t cut anything except obviously dead, dying or crossing branches.
