Thanks for the advice... A few other family members took advantage of the free sod and laid it very similar as I have. The ones that have been watering SUPER heavy seem to be doing the best. With that I mind I feel I may have to up my water to help get things going. I pull the sod up last night and checked to see what it looked like. Soil was moist, but not overly wet by any means. Also when I picked up the free sod, I opted to take the sod from the top of the pallets. Since the sod had been on the pallets all weekend, I feel I may have ended up with some of the dry sun scorched rolls. I honestly believe this because some of the yellow/dead rolls, was the first ones we loaded on the truck/last ones to lay on the ground. When looking closely the roots still look good and there is green life near the soil. My goal at this point in time is the water the PI$$ out of it and hopefully it will recover. The holiday weekend is suppose to be mild, so hopefully it will recover with a little TLC... I don't have a roller, but I did walk the area over really good last night and tried to eliminate any air pockets. There was definitely some air pockets under the sod, but amazingly those was the GREEN patches.

KBG will look brown under heat stress. When you say you live in NoCal, where is that exactly? If you tell me you live in Sac'to or the Bay Area, I would argue that you live in north Central Cal. It is kind of important. If you live in Redding or to the north or west, or up in the mountains, that is different, too. Fescue will never fill in anything. Fescue is a bunch type grass that just sits there for practically decades before enlarging the one plant. The idea with planting fescue is to get enough plants that when they grow to their diameter of 1 inch (max) that you have enough plants to become dense. KBG on the other hand will form a dense blanket and fill in anywhere a fescue plant dies. Did they roll the sod down with a water filled roller? If not it is not too late to do that. The sod must have contact with the underlying soil. Roots will not grow through the air to reach the soil underneath. You should be watering 3x per day for about 10 minutes each time, until the roots knit into the underlying soil. Then you can start to deep water. Deep watering means you soak the soil down deep by applying 1 full inch of water all at one time. Then allow the soil to dry out at the surface for about a week (this time of year - and depending on where you are in NoCal). Then water again a full inch. Set your mower to the highest setting or one notch down. Short grass gets much more heat and drought stress than tall grass. In fact you can set it all the way up and go 2 weeks between mowing if you want. Are you going to fertilize with organics or with chemicals? You can have a spectacular lawn back there if you water, mow, and fertilize properly. And if you are doing that, then you will hardly ever need herbicide, insecticide, or fungicide.

What you are seeing is normal and expected. You need to up the water to 4 or 5 times a day. Be sure to start mowing when it needs it, and that should only be another day or two. Just do not get the ground so wet that it becomes soggy where the lawn mower wheels will leave ruts.

Southern California, huh? Can I assume you live in Blythe? Big Bear? La Jolla? And if you tell me you're in LA, can I assume Pomona? Malibu? Pasadena? You're going to have to be a lot more specific about the location. All these places have different microclimates and soils. Judging by the mud under the sod, you are watering waaaaaaaaaaaay too much. All you need to do is moisten the roots and the soil right under the roots. It should not be so wet that it squooshes when you walk on it. By the appearance I'm guessing you have St Augustine, but check with your installer and even Lowe's for the specific variety of St Augustine. Also it has some disease in it. That is typical for a new install off the stack at Lowe's. I would have recommended St Augustine for almost all SoCal locations except Big Bear and La Jolla, but I still want to know more specifically where you are. Once you confirm you have St Augustine, I can help you get rid of the disease. The disease looks like this... That is easy to get rid of but you need to get your watering under control first.
