The dated all white look is done with because people couldn’t live in an operating room. The constant requests to “help me warm this up” in their brand new kitchens seem to have gotten through to those paying attention. This is why you’re seeing the huge surge in color and natural wood kitchens.

It shares detailed colour attributes of many popular whites. A fab rule of thumb, shared by the owner of the site (Lori Sawaya) is - when combining different colours of white, look for a minimum difference in Chroma (colourfulness) of at least 0.2. This stops one colour of white looking dingy next to the other.

I think sometimes people here are apt to forget, when you’ve waited so long for a particular space in your home, the dreams we have in our mind are hard to shake. Don’t be put off by what’s popular or what isn’t. As long as it appeals to you,,,,,

But surprisingly to lots of us, completely white spaces aren’t as calming as we might have hoped.

Our eyes rove to make sense of a space.

Contrast between colours helps with this. When everything is so similar in Value (lightness) and Chroma (colourfulness), our eyes don’t settle upon any one thing in a space so easily.

Not so relaxing.

So the introduction of wood, in the example above, helps.

But if white upon white is what you are after, making sure you have lots of variants in texture and value so your eye isn’t constantly on the go really helps add to that layered affect.

If you have saved some white-on-white images for your inspiration, ask yourself why they appeal more than others.

Variety of Chroma?

Are there obviously many windows and therefore light in the space?

Are the ceilings painted the same white colour as the walls?

Is the trim lighter or darker than walls?
