New Black-and-White Kitchen Has All the Bells and Whistles
A coffee station, a wet bar, a wine fridge and dual ovens are among the many perks in this Minneapolis kitchen
Before: The previous kitchen featured tile floors, pickle-washed oak cabinets and granite countertops. “I’d describe the look as late ’80s soft contemporary,” Loven says.
After: Loven kept a similar layout for the new kitchen to save the expense of having to reroute plumbing and also because the double island layout creates a nice separation between the great room, kitchen and dining area.
The new island bases are covered in ebony-stained oak and topped with white quartz from Difiniti. The backside of the island facing the great room features cabinet doors of stainless steel and ribbed glass. LED strips lights lining the interior of the cabinets and the island toe-kicks add a stylish and helpful glow at night.

The new Shaker-style white cabinets go all the way to the ceiling. “I hate when cabinets stop short of the ceiling. It’s a waste of space, and it looks unfinished,” Loven says. The cabinets feature oversize black iron pulls to help break up the two large walls of white cabinets.
A niche in the center of the cabinet wall to the right includes a built-in coffee maker with a microwave underneath. The cabinet directly to the left of the coffee station conceals the refrigerator.

Before: The one appliance that changed locations from the previous kitchen to the new one is the gas range. The countertop with the window behind it is where the new built-in gas range is located. The old range was located directly across the room on the opposite wall.
After: Loven and her team removed the old window and the cabinets above it to create space for the new built-in gas range, backsplash and custom hood. The backsplash tiles are an iridescent silver metallic glass that adds a glamorous touch to the space. “The tiles reflect a lot of light that makes the space feel bigger and brighter,” the designer says.
To the left of the range, Loven replaced the single oven with double ovens and a warming drawer underneath.

A trio of counter stools look out to the great room and the front yard beyond. Behind the counter stools the dining area now features a white oval dining table surrounded by six black leather chairs.
The wall of cabinets to the right of the gas range includes two glass-front cabinet doors to display the homeowner’s collection of wine glasses. The countertop underneath the cabinets includes a sink that serves as a wet bar for mixing cocktails. The wall of cabinets behind the dining table, not pictured, includes a built-in wine refrigerator and wine rack.

Before: The existing great room included a gas fireplace that was situated a foot above the floor. The fireplace surround was gray-painted drywall.
After: The bottom of the new gas fireplace is flush with the floor, leaving more space for Lovin to add a mounted flat-screen TV above. The new fireplace surround is quartzite, and white shiplap covers the wall behind the TV.
Two built-in bookshelves now bookend the fireplace. “The old fireplace wall had too much wasted space. Now it looks finished and there’s plenty of extra storage too,” Loven says.

Kitchen and Great Room at a Glance
Who lives here: Sandi Adams
Location: Minneapolis
Size: About 800 square feet (74 square meters)
Designers: Danielle Loven of Vivid Interior Design (interior design); Windmiller Design Studio (architecture) and Frontier Structures (builders)
Designer Danielle Loven says Sandi Adams, the owner of this newly renovated house in Minneapolis, was one of those rare clients who knew exactly what she wanted. “Nine out of 10 clients need me to walk them through every decision,” Loven says. “From the start, she knew all the features in the kitchen she wanted and said that a black-and-white color palette was mandatory.” Since Adams is a successful entrepreneur who owns multiple boutique hotels, this sort of decisiveness shouldn’t come as a surprise.
The home’s kitchen and adjacent great room received a full rehab. All of the walls, lighting and floors are new, but the basic layout of both rooms remains the same. The remodeled kitchen still includes two islands and a dining area that leads out to the backyard, while the great room is centered on a gas fireplace that received a new surround and a flat-screen TV above.
