We have distressed oak flooring that we love. We didn't pick a color until right before it was ready to be stained. The walls and cabinets were already painted and stained. Our guys came in with a selection of colors and stained a few blocks on the floor so we could see the color in contrast to the other colors. I don't have time to post a picture right now, but my colors wouldn't work with your colors anyway. Does your builder have someone who can help with color? My builder had a good eye for color and helped direct me to good choices. I found the paint and stain guys to be pretty helpful too. Good luck on your selection.

You mentioned that you thought about tile. I saw this floor in a magazine and knew right away that I wanted it in my newly remodeled 60 year old house. It combines tile and hardwood for a warm feeling but not the same as the rest of the house that has dark hardwoods. It was not difficult to do either. My builder and I did this one. If you are in the fortunate situation that it's one selection for the whole area just get what you like. When the 2 areas end up not matching, that is what makes the space look smaller...the discrepancy/ contrasts. Just get what you like.

Katy, Are your current floors made of solid wood? They are so pretty. Are you sure you want to cover them with vinyl? I love your floors are they wood throughout your house? Have you looked at some mid century mod kitchens? Maybe copy one of the floor ideas... Your cabinets look a bit like Shaker. I love walnut. Maybe a cork or rubber... I wonder if you could strip and re-stain the current floors in a color that might work with your over plan. Luxury Vinyl seems like an interesting product. Here are some neat photos from Houzz...
