every design is subjective and depends on the overall look.

you're remodeling how? With what?

you mean the before is basically like this on the left? you can frame it and get new light:

the large mirror, prob would need a frame or a bevel. without it, it can look dated. would also need some sconces or diff lighting.

you can always have the mirror cut (if you can take it down in one piece). then you can frame it out w/wood of some sort, or even tile around it so it looks built in. cut holes in it for sconces, whatever

but without pictures, it's merely a guess.

There are always ways to make a feature look more contemporary.

I will keep my large mirrors because I have a windowless bathroom.

I took out my large mirror (Too dated from the nineties, I thought) And wish I had it back!

I am also keeping the large mirror because that is the only mirror I have. I don't have a full length mirror.

Besides just "liking the look" (or not) of a big mirror, I'm of the camp that a mirror should be big enough to reflect what you need or want it to reflect. If you've got a big window overlooking a nice view or a tree or even art, sure, get a mirror that will reflect those things back to you. If the mirror will reflect natural light, then, sure.

If your bathroom is so tiny that you feel claustrophobic and a mirror will help ease your phobia (ok, or will just make it feel better to you,) sure, get a bigger mirror. That said - is it important to you that the bathroom *seem* bigger than it is? Maybe it is.

Truth is, I don't really even *need* a mirror over my vanity. I don't wear makeup and I don't "do" my hair. I do like a mirror over the vanity because that's what I'm used to - so a small mirror is all I need.

I agree with many of the commenters here about the need for more information. That said, I often counsel clients who are contemplating the removal of a large mirror (you will almost certainly NOT be able to get it out in one piece, by the way) to cover up part of the mirror with paper to preview the effect. Some don't miss it. Others had no idea how dramatic the difference would be and how much smaller the space looked and felt.

I took a large one down to put up a smaller framed one - and hated it so much I put the big one back up. :)

I suspect this is a deeply personal thing. Some folks won't notice, some folks will prefer a more framed look...but I was stunned how much smaller and darker the room felt without that big mirror.

I also suspect it matters less if the room is spacious and bright to begin with. I'm working with a small builder basic bathroom. What it really needs is a solar tube/sun tunnel - but until we get around to that, big mirror it is.

Because you love having the large mirror, I would recommend keeping it. Just adding a frame to the mirror can give it an updated look.

Thank you everyone. Yes, it is a frameless mirror over the vanity, wall to wall (71" wide) in a narrow, long bathroom. Opposite the mirror and what it reflects, is a large window looking out into trees. I think I will keep it as is. It sounds as though those of you who had one and took it down regret it. And I think I would, too. I was just wondering if that look is so ridiculously out that I would appear woefully dated if I kept it. My remodel is replacing the horrid garden tub with a large frameless tiled shower, new flooring, and taking out the tiny shower and replacing it with a closet.
