Size of mirror over vanity
Comments (12)I think different approaches work for different people. Our bathrooms are small (master is 6' x 10', hall bath is 6' x about 12'). In the master bath, we have a 60" vanity that abuts the wall on one side. Over that vanity, we have a full-size mirror (as described by palimpsest) with a 24" LED fixture above each sink coming through the mirror (love that look). In the hall bath (used by DD, and also serving as guest bath), the vanity is in a 55" alcove. We chose to use a free-standing 48" vanity and a "free-standing" decorative mirror mounted horizontally, with the same LED lights hung vertically to the left and right of the mirror. The light from the LEDs (George Kovacs) is terrific, much much better than the light we got from the recessed lighting and over-mirror lights in our previous home....See MoreBathroom mirror size over double vanity - single or double?
Comments (10)I prefer two mirrors as well because I think it gives a more balanced look and it provides defined spaces, his and hers in our case. Your statement about wanting to make it so that 3 people can use it is what has me curious though, is this a what if type scenario or is a 3rd person actually going to be in there all the time? The reason I ask is because DH and I used to make choices based on the what if's a lot. We'd spend the money or compromise on what we really wanted only to never have those "what if's" materialize. We bought a crew cab truck so if we needed to we could tote people but never once did anyone sit back there. We turned a room (that could have been my craft room) in to a guest room and in 10 years it's only been used a handful of times and an air mattress would have worked just as well. So if you want the big mirror because it will actually be used in the context you're planning for, great...then there's a need and that would be the more functional choice for your situation, but if you're just thinking well maybe 3 people might need it, then don't focus on that and do what is more practical for your every day living. Comments (18)Thank you everybody for your help. I’ve made the decision to move the wiring and go shopping for new lights! Beverly, as far as the finish, for some reason on my drawing the finish looks dark but it is actually chrome. The program that I’m using has a limited selection of fixtures so that’s not necessarily the style I’m going for. I’m just trying to get the scale and proportions correct. I am committed to the chrome because I already have a chrome shower faucet. The only other lighting in the room is a flush mount ceiling fixture which has not yet been purchased. I am a little worried that I’m reducing the amount of light bulbs by one and lowering them down on the wall some. Because of the shape of the room, the light from the ceiling light will not reach the toilet and I’m counting on the sconces to light that area. Hopefully I’ll have enough light and hopefully I can find a ceiling light and sconces to either match or coordinate with one another....See Moredistance from wall and mirror for sconces over bath vanity?
Comments (2)Hi, When looking at bath vanity lighting its important to get lighting in pleasing proportions - to the space, to the size of the mirror and to the size of vanity. Many factors to consider: sconce size, mirror dimensions, overall wall dimensions, proximity of the vanity to a corner, etc. will all play a part in deciding fixture placement. If you can provide those kinds of details and/or provide a plan and/or elevation sketches, that will go a long way to allowing one of us to assist further. Good luck!...See Morehousequester
