I have some open shelves (not floating, however) in my kitchen, and was able to install under shelf lights by adding a 'rail' under the bottom shelf so the light fixture would be disguised a bit. May not be the best aesthetic solution for floating shelves, but one option.... My lowest shelf is installed pretty low--probably would look funny if the shelf was installed higher over the countertop. Here is a picture--sorry it doesn't show better detail under the shelf, but you can see the rail I added to the shelf. And try to ignore the mocked up 'paper tile' backsplash....I need to take final pictures! Also, one website that I remember seeing with puck lights embedded into floating shelves--spekva (I've linked below)--I haven't looked thru that site lately, maybe it has more detailed pictures of how those lights are installed...? Hi, mshutterbug. I like your concept. It's essentially a "rotating" gallery wall and I think it will be interesting and fun. I'd go with shelves in a similar finish as that of the built-in top. In consideration of the shorties in the family, I'd add a light weight but sturdy step stool. (It's a drag sometimes, but working for what we want tends to build character!) It'll also serve as nice perch for a smaller person. Since you're thinking about ditching the framed cork board, consider some art in its place. As I'm sure you're aware, art is something that enriches and educates young and old alike. I think a lamp would be good, too. A table top terrarium would be educational and likely enjoyed by everyone in the family. You can make it and care for it together. They're really fun! I added an abacus, because it could be a learning opportunity for everyone in the house. They also have an orderly, sculptural quality I find appealing. Your aesthetic may differ. Here's a mock-up to illustrate my ideas. I hope it helps! (The rug placement/size can be addressed when and if you choose.)

The rending has sconces, but we decided during the build to exclude them as there was plenty of light in the room already. The initial plan was for the first shelf to be 20” above the countertop, and I was thinking make the second shelf 16” above that. Which would put them 56” and 72” above the floor, respectively. Since I’m 6’ tall, I would be able to reach both shelves without a ladder. That said, it seems the consensus is to do shelves, but keep them less then 48” wide. My contractor made a suggestion about varying the length of the two shelves, or even introducing a 3rd shelf in line with the top window trim. Thoughts?
