Need lots of help: we are (finally)remodeling our bath! (long)
Comments (5)Hi Homey, With a 24 inch constrain you may want to consider using a pedistal sink, there are designs that offer a more contemporary feel. Another idea would be one of thinner vanities that has 1/2 of the sink sticking out, they are usually not as wide as a standard vanity is. In regards to your question about rectangle tiles, yes, you can get almost any stone in that shape, but if you're going to have a modern feel in the room, you may want to consider glass. Comments (5)Thanks everyone for your comments so far. Running it vertically is definitely an option and something I hadn't thought of so thank you! My only worry about running everything up the posts all the way now is that it will add significantly to my costs which have already grown bigger than I was planning so I was kind of hoping that I could find a way to make it look ok without having to go all out which is why I was considering all the options. Jerzee girl, were you talking about the white trim in that link or the stone on the underside? Snookums, yes, I believe they did everything correctly and I've been here throughout the whole process and watched each step -- from cement board and mud pan and building the curb all the way to the entire shower coated in redguard... They are very careful and have a good reputation in the area. Anyway, thanks all and I hope more people will chime in....See MoreVery small house...Need help deciding where to put the remodel budget.
Comments (32)ok exact measurements. the house is not exactly a 20x30 square but its close enoguh. a few of the inner walls are thicker as they used to be exterior walls. the kitchen is 113inches by 141. It does fit a corner banquette with a round table and 3 chairs, and you can seat up to 2 on each leg of the banquette. Most comfortable with fewer than 6 people but up to 7 is possible. 8 if someone sits in the corner . Master is 130x116 (inches). Bedrooms are 80 inches wide and 136 and 116 inches long. Bathroom i was wrong on the measurements. It is 98x 57 (there is a cut out here so its not a perfect rectangle). The hall is 36 inches wide. The biggest benefit of using up that space to me is that people won't be as confined to a tiny hallway where it is awkward to pass anyone else. So I like the idea of taking part of the bathroom and part of the hallway to make another bathroom, and also to take down the walls int eh kitchen. So we would need to get some quotes for this but it seems relatively doable. We could wait on the closets for a while and it doesnt require moving any walls that we didnt already plan to move. Reality is it doesnt improve rental price THAT much to add a bathroom as far as I can tell, but there are only a few other rentals in the area to compare to. So addding the bath is partially for resale partially just because it irks me to have such a wasteful layout. Either way we do make back the cost of the bathroom quickly....See MoreApproaching a big remodel
Comments (27)Sorry folks, I don't have my notifications set up properly I guess. @weedyacres - Thanks for sharing. What our house lacks the most, where an addition would help, is a master suite. Our bedroom is really small, we have clothes everywhere haha, and the bathroom is joke -- no room for a door! So that's the primary thing. The problem we're wrestling with is that an addition would be expensive but it wouldn't add much value to the house. We've discussed going up a story, and adding a master suite up there ... even MORE expensive, but at least we'd be going from a 3 to a 4 bedroom and from 1.5 baths to 2. @stiley thanks for the perspective. The value of our house has indeed gone up, it's true. I tend to agree with you on using a design/build firm. Where I'm not 100% certain is if we were to scale back our ambitions to just a kitchen remodel with no changes to the footprint or walls. That's minimum $200k with a design / build firm, and maybe 1/4 of that if its DIY. Not a small difference. I wish design/build was only say, 20%, more than DIY but that's not my sense at all....See MoreCharlie Baum
