Peeling bark and Caterpillar nests

shawnacquigley

We have a silver maple out front that has a lot of peeling bark and we had a good week an infestation of gypsy moth caterpillars this year like many places. The tree is covered in nests, especially inside where the bark has peeled.

I understand the best thing to do to limit the caterpillars next year is to scrape off as many Nest as possible and soak them in bleach water but I am concerned about damaging the tree and peeling off the bark when I do it. There are also many nests higher up in the tree that I won't be able to reach.

Any advice?? And any thoughts on the cause of the peeling bark on the tree to treat in the first place?
