evergreen trees in full shade
Comments (5)The highest quality, long-term screening plantings for shaded sites in cold climates are still the traditional yew, holly and box. There are many kinds of holly, unless your New York(?) climate is too severe for much other than Ilex opaca you might be able to use a different kind of holly, that looks different. Otherwise, there are many cultivated varieties of that species - maybe a variation like yellow berries instead of red would be dramatic enough to please you....See MoreSmaller Evergreen Shade Tree Recommendations?
Comments (8)I keep reading negative things about the photinia, so now I'm thinking about the little gem magnolia again. I would rather not have to deal with leaves falling, but maybe a small trickle of leaves falling year round will be better than a tree dumping all its leaves in winter and not having the privacy benefit of the tree again until the next spring. Can't I keep it from growing surface roots if I do long watering sessions once or twice per week so the roots go deep? They are a bit narrower than I had in mind for creating a couple of shady spots on the patio, but I assume they will cast a shadow larger that the actual spread of the tree, so it might be fine. One of the reviews said it grows in compact spaces and are good for town-homes and to separate closely spaced homes. Kind of sounds like it should fit my requirements. "Design Ideas: Although it is labeled as dwarf, this very columnar evergreen will reach over 25 feet tall at maturity. A great plant to separate multistory city homes on narrow lots without crowding them. Makes a great evergreen screen to block unattractive views, increase privacy or absorb sound. With its pretty flowers, it makes a great accent tree for small space. Ideal for town houses and condominiums."...See MoreLooking for a small/medium evergreen shade tree near front door
Comments (6)Bay is nice, some people have trouble with it suckering. Could be due to incorrect planting. Strawberry Tree do you mean Arbutus unedo? Do you want to see the soles of my shoes that are full of mashed fruit? Lovely, lovely tree, but It's messy as hell when that fruit falls. Fruit attracts rodents, too. Eriobotrya deflexa, Bronze Loquat (non fruiting). Agonis flexuosa Cupressus arizonica 'San Pedro Matir' (slow). Comments (6)i second getting rid of the picea pungens ... use the money for removal rather than treatment.. which will fail ... you dont mention how big they are ... im thinking it might not be a shade issue.. but a water competition problem .. depending on size ... and i am not sure how much you should be digging.. anywhere near those utility boxes ... how about you stand in the windows where you might be gazing out in winter ... and define a spot 8 or ten feet away .. and install a section of pvc fencing or trellises.. or some such .. to block your sight line.. but be working further away from the utilities ... the sticker indicates they already dont appreciate you planting next to it .. so why plant more???? in other words.. get out of the box you are sitting in ... to fix your problem ... and the problem is a sight line.. not the pungens.. or planting more right on the box ... ken https://duckduckgo.com/?q=section+of+pvc+fencing+to+hide+utility+box&t=ffcm&iar=images&iax=1&ia=images...See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
