It’s not good. It’s pretty terrible in fact. What you have currently is much better than what your cabinet seller created. Your cabinet seller needs to be fired right now, and you need to be working with an actual kitchen designer.

The kitchen does not need to take over the breakfast area unless you do a lot of structural alterations to get rid of the bump out and to move plumbing and electrical both. You’re far better off with a banquette and real table in the bump out, and leave the kitchen portion essentially unchanged.

The island going into the breakfast area is what we requested. We don’t want a table anymore. We have a separate dining room with a large table if we need.

The bump out that I think you’re referring to is a wall with stairs behind it so not movable no matter what.

We thought a counter-height table was a great idea until it was our primary place to eat, play games and congregate, then we found it's terribly uncomfortable to sit on bar stool for longer than it takes to eat a sandwich. You're going to be restricted even further in that you can never move it if you want to, and if you put enough overhang to pull barstools under, you won't even be able to use cabinets that are under there. That angled dishwasher is a terrible idea. You're losing so much potential functionality for a locked in design that will really hurt you if you ever resell. And you're paying an arm and a leg for what's essentially a bar height table that you could otherwise purchase for less than a thousand bucks. I strongly urge you to rethink this design.

I really don‘t want a kitchen table anymore and considered the comfort and plan to get very comfy counter stools with backs and maybe arms. I’m not stuck on the angled dishwasher but I do like how it seems to open the space.

We plan to be here awhile so resale isn't a huge concern. I would put seldom used items under the eating area too.

I guess we might have to rethink some things 😕

Don't get discouraged and try not to take the comments personally. You'll get a lot of feedback and it's all meant to get you thinking so you don't make an expensive mistake you'll end up really regretting.

The issue with the barstools is not the comfort of the stools, it's having your feet hanging (if you're short like me) or resting on a crossbar (if you're tall). You feel it in your back eventually. And it's really not good for little ones. Hopefully the design gurus here can help you come up with a great layout!

Where would your prep space be? That area over the dishwasher would be your best prep space, and it will likely be littered with dirty dishes. I’m just a layperson who is currently working on a kitchen, but this looks really odd. I think your current configuration is more functional.

I am confused. Wouldn't the best prep area between the sink and the range? I must be missing something.

That angled peninsula is a big no. It adds complexity, expense, and discomfort. You might as well just buy a pub table for the existing space and save 10K.

The original design is 100% better than the proposed one. Start over without that angled peninsula.

I was a little skeptical about the angled dishwasher and losing some of my usual prep space so with all the feedback we are going back to the drawing board and will go with our current layout and splurge on a really nice regular height rectangle kitchen table. Thanks to everyone as I dont want any regrets and I’m sure there may have been some.
