Do you like to shop at thrift stores?
Comments (66)Gracias, ajsmama :). Now it all makes sense. At least till I forget what I just learned; occupational middle-age hazard these days! Re. the ebay/thrift store relationship--do you think that the now ubiquitous online markets (EBay, Craigslist etc) have hurt, harmed or not affected bricks n mortar thrifting? Years ago (I was working PT, had more time to do fun stuff like this) my MIL and I enjoyed going to local bazaars, yard sales and church rummage sales. There were fairly often some nice things dumped in there. Now I suspect many more people are doing what flyleft encountered, shopping in order to then resell. I think there is a whole new 'entrepreneur' niche, at least I've read about people who make their living or at least some income from selling online. Dunno, just wondering what folks who are more in the know think about this? Ann...See MoreVintage/Retro Thrift Store Scores (pics)
Comments (26)OMG, OMG, OMG, Joanna---that is the IDENTICAL table! Is it listed as a Milo Baughman?? I can't believe this--I'm only on my first cup of coffee and I'm already having heart palpatitations! I am so glad I decided to post on this site and that you happened to be reading! I don't think I ever would have known what I got, because I have limited knowledge of modern furniture. Reading everyone's delight at my serendipity is almost as much fun as finding this was! Here's the story: I got it at a nearby Salvation Army. I've been on vacation since Christmas so I've been indulging my thrift shop addiction (and it truly is!). Over the years I have found some incredibly fabulous things there but stopped going because about a year or two ago a new manager was hired who appeared to be robbing the place blind (this is not unusual at these thrift shops--sometimes corrupt employees sell all the good stuff out the back door). He and another antiques dealer who got herself a part time there no longer seem to be employed, and the good stuff is coming back out on the floor. I think successfully shopping charitable thrift shops involves persistence and tenacity. My house is truly full of treasures I've found over the years, yet any friends or family that I've directed to these stores scratch their heads and say they can never find anything. Maybe the stuff just finds me, because like a stray dog, it knows who will love it! Regarding the frames on the print, I think I do agree that I should leave them as is. I do agree with Flyleft and dillydally that they are part of the art--it's even more clear IRL. But if I were to paint them, I do like Les's suggestion of a wood tone from the burl. I think I'll leave them for now--they have a real mid-century bohemian feel that helps balance some of the elements I have in this room. Amy, I can't help but think of your gorgeous decor when I look at these red prints, so I am even more inspired to keep the original frame color. And yes, we should talk--I've been meaning to check out a couple of the places I think you're referring to. I also recently found a cool little consignment shop in your town that I was thinking of consigning some stuff to. Oh, what a way to start the New Year! Thanks everyone for boosting my excitement! I wish you all similar luck in 2009!...See MoreThrift Store/Garage Sale Art
Comments (11)You're right, Marisha. I called it a mat because I thought it was too hard to describe the frame. It is a common style. The frame consists of a 3" wooden border, an inch of canvas or linen, and a narrow strip of molding inside that... The fabric insert is always some variation of white or tan I think and you only see them used with oil paintings. And thanks for the suggestion re spray paint! I have another painting I like but the mat colors bother me....one is baby pink and one baby blue, so I will take it apart and paint them. Jenn, I don't really like the $5 paintings...sort of fall and winter scenes in pale muted colors featuring deer. But I like the frames and am trying to make them work for another thrift store painting of yellow and white flowers that came in a very cheap frame and an inexpensive but suppose to be original watercolor of a Paris street scene that doesn't have a frame. I got some experience with mix and match when my aunt gave my mother and I about 30 original paintings, many of which were unframed and we didn't want to spend the $$$ to have it done. My mother had a stock pile of misc. frames and mats in her garage and we had fun trying to make them work, mostly successfully. I am looking forward to checking out you pics. Happy hunting! Comments (24)When I hear about taking truckloads of new stuff to the landfill ... I cry a bit. I live within a couple of miles of a "landfill" (double four-letter word for a "dump" - also a four-letter word, as you may notice). A couple of years ago the local owner of a "landfill" had its capacity licence increased from 9 million to 17 million tons ... and I figured at the time that I knew what'd be coming next, as the City of Toronto, 2.5 million or so, has been taking flack for years for shipping their garbage to a site near Detroit. A year or so ago Toronto bought this dump ... for $220 million. They've been shipping something like 140 semi-s a day over the border, and will soon ship them next door. The site is right beside the freeway from Toronto to Detroit, so I expect them to build a new exit ramp ... right into the dump! Could you spare a tear or two for my predicament? ole joyfilled (usually) P.S. Being frugal (having helped folks who'd left their former lives in just the clothes that they wore, get their lives back together in an area recently visited by war), I hate seeing useful things scrapped. And did so long before the recent furore over the expansion of the local dump. o j...See MoreCelery. Visualization, Rendering images
