Any rules for placing bird houses?
Comments (32)sharpgirl, I can only share my experience w/ BB. For several years I put up houses built (I thought) to BB specs. No takers. And because I had seen BB on my farm I knew they were around, but I didn't know where they were nesting. Until one day I noticed that the 'fake' hollow owl I had attached to the roof peak of my small barn, had BB's coming and going around it. BB's had pecked a hole in the chest of owl and apparently built a nest inside. This is now the 2nd year that they're nesting there. Their nest is about 15-18 ft. off ground, 100 ft. from a feeder but hidden by a bldg., hole faces South, slightly southeast. BB's perch on barn roof before they enter the hole. Both male and female feed the babies. Area of nest is surrounded by either mowed pasture or lawn. No close trees for 50-60 ft. I overflow a large watering trough (for horse) several times a day and the BB's show up to bathe and frolic in the water, if it's warm outside. So my bluebirds outsmarted me and made their own personalized nest and they must like it cause they've returned this year. Good Luck with attracting your own BB's. Comments (5)There is a great web site that will give you instruction on where to place your boxes and how to keep your cavity nesters safe. www.sialis.org It is a Blue Bird site but also has lots of information on the other cavity nesters including Dees. They are such fun little birds! Good Luck!...See MoreOld Eggs? New Eggs?
Comments (4)Do you have any idea about how old the babies were when they disappeared? Bluebird babies stay in the nest ABOUT 18 days, give or take a day, after they hatch. If you know when they hatched (you should always keep records) you will know how old they were. If they were 17 or 18 days old they may have just fledged normally from the nest. If they were younger than that they may have been the victims of predation by anything that could reach them. If they fledged normally you may not see them for weeks; they do a very good job of hiding for the first weeks. The eggs you dropped may have been old eggs, especially if they were buried in the nesting material. Please remove that ornamental box now and go to the Sialis website that Michelle posted for you. You will be able to make a proper setup for the next Bluebirds in your yard. Do it soon, if you can, in case this mother bird wants to lay more eggs. Good luck. www.sialis.org...See MoreJeanne's First Ever Full Tablescape...Yippee, Levi & Billy
Comments (16)Ahhh, thanks everyone! This was fun & even more fun to hear back from you all! Appreciate your "sweet" comments *blush* The cowgirl pic was in 1950 (turned 4 yrs. old) in our backyard...I was a "town girl" and a "tomboy." (like purplemoon!) MiloM...yes, it is fun to mess with photo software...I love it & then can pick & choose what ya want to print! PM...the jean legs I sewed were to be napkins placed on top of the dinnerplate & then saucer & bowl on top of it...but it didn't seem to look quite right! LOL! So I thought of dishtowels & thought, well, back in them days, one would just use it for a napkin! Unlike some of you, I did not do well with horses...usually got thrown off or fell off...on the few occassions I tried to ride at cousins' farm. Then raising our family on an acreage, my DH took care of that phase with ponies for our kids...he knew how to ride 'em! LOL! Cheeky...yes, those dishes are GALAXY...I bought a whole set several yrs. ago at a consignment shop & have loved them...cause they are so heavy-duty...no chips in those babies! Bet your's have held up the same! ValleyMP...that pic of your GM in 1908 (with gun) sounds like a winner!...use it! Great conversation pc! I'm leaving the tablescape up a few days as I'm going to get DH to have a meal at the table with me...we are "recliner diners!" So, thanks for the inspiration on this forum...I am learning so much!
