Paint choice dilemma...Please Help!
Comments (11)I think that with such grand ceilings, and white tile, darker paint will enhance the lightness of the floor, and the house risks feeling not grounded enough. Which on the other hand can be interesting..if it is intentional. For example, I decided on medium-dark floor in my current home with very high ceilings, because I wanted to ground it, didn't want the feeling of a ballroom. But I could go with light flooring and it would still be fine, it would just give a totally different mood. There are designers and color specialists that do color consultations, sometimes even on internet. Maria Killiam's blog comes to mind. Laurel Bern's blog comes to mind. I'm sure there are many more. It's not exactly cheap, but it is just that-color consultation only. Also, I don't know about the paint stores, but couple designers I met in other stores were nothing short of amazing-able to help so much without even seeing the space. They drew the space as I tried to explain, and their renderings were better than anything I could ever draw, even though I knew the house, and they heard about it for the first time in their life.. It doesn't happen often I must say, but when it does-oh wow. You're in luck. So yes, definitely check with your local paint store..you might just meet somebody brilliant there, whose input will be priceless....See MoreColor choices for interior doors

Comments (1)It surprises me that Houzz frequently mentions gray as a current color. I have avoided gray for the last two years in my design practice. In a conversation with other Austin, Texas designers recently, they indicated that though they have clients who still ask for gray, they try is steer them away from gray and into taupe tones, or white. Color trends are just that, trends. And gray has had it's time of glory, which designers I talk to agree has ended. So I would not suggest that you paint cabinets gray. I think a black island, with the other cabinets painted or taupe, would work nicely. If you're going to keep the tile flooring, choose a taupe that has a bit of that color in it. Consider changing the cabinet hardware to a sleeker, clean lined style....See MoreInterior Paint Dilemma
Comments (13)For one, I admire your energy..the thought of painting the cabinets wouldn't even cross my mind, and if it did-I'd be too lazy to move in this direction. Why? because it wouldn't bother me. It works with the tile. It works with the countertop. It looks like it works with the house. I'd look for some interesting hardware, hardware can really influence things I have a very boring closet next to the garage entrance, in a color I don't like, a style I don't prefer, it just was the cheapest we could get . I bought a bunch of vintage handles on Etsy and now I actually look at it with some fondness even. (besides finding hardware I love, I'd put utensils in some vessel I love, put a plant somewhere, and in general would just indulge myself in little useful kitchen-y things that please me every day without big commitment on my part.) Do you have undercabinet lighting? But if you've your mind set...and you paint yourself..I love the sage green you used, by itself, it's beautiful, but you're right- it brings out pink in the tile and is not strong enough to hold its own next to it. Either something much darker-but you'd have a darker kitchen. Or something in warm white realm. But then you won't have enough contrast with your countertop...The countertop stays, right? I have to think. One more idea..do you hate rugs in the kitchen? Something durable..either inside-outside, or actually real deal wool is tough enough. I love rugs in the kitchen, I even bought one before we moved in.. but I never unrolled it..)) .that's why I'm asking. I mean to say-it's a nice kitchen..well to an outsider like me. You might be fed up with it as you live there, but little things can make it fresher and newer for you. Maybe indeed it's better you start with the walls and then re-assess? While having a general idea for cabinets in mind? Is there an ispiration picture/s you can share? Your dining set seems traditional-would you like to stay traditional, or you're seeking to streamline things more, or..?...See More- 3 years ago
