Comments (1)I have a room over a garage and i have used a product called Tredaire Boardwalk.tog rating 0.55 It will only work if the floor is floating. you can download a data sheet from a company called underlay4u if you go the there wood and laminate page Here is a link that might be useful: www.underlay4u.com...See MoreInsulating underlayment for 3/4" hardwood
Comments (3)There are spray types but they're often done in bulk, by professionals. I purchased a bigger kit of this product (http://www.energyefficientsolutions.com/Quick-Cure-Spray-Foam.asp?item=FOAM205) years ago and coated my old leaky metal ducts. It would probably do the job and be preferable to putting a layer of cork over your whole floor....See MoreHardwood Underlayment question
Comments (2)The type of install with the hardwood will indicate what level of underpad you can use. A nail/cleat/staple in place hardwood has few options as many of these underpads are NOT allowed to be pierced (thousands of holes are created by the nails/cleats/staples = not allowed for many sheet products). A vapour barrier needs to be dealt with in the crawl space. The concrete "cap" might be acceptable...it might not be. Your hardwood flooring installer should be testing for plywood moisture levels. You, as the homeowner, must know if your crawl space is PROPERLY ventilated/heated/etc for the size and configuration that you have. An INCREDIBLY WELL EDUCATED flooring installer (the REALLY EXPENSIVE GUY that no one hires unless they have money to "burn") can have a look at the crawl space to help you determine the appropriate measures that need to be taken (or not taken) for your hardwood floor/indoor air quality health. A floating hardwood or glue down hardwood can have cork underlay used to offer some sound insulation as well as thermal insulation...but this is HIGHLY dependent on the crawl space AND the type of installation. Cork is NOT allowed to be pierced...so it is not allowed to be used with nails/cleats/staples. Good luck. The crawl space is the determining factor....See MoreUnderlayment for engineered hardwood XPS vs moisture barrier
Comments (3)So...you need a moisture barrier first and foremost. That means the industry standard is just fine: 6mil polyethylene sheeting = $0.06/sf at Home Depot. You will need moisture resistant tape such as "Red Duct Tape" = $9.95/roll = 75 linear feet of adhesion. If you wish an underpad, you can look at 3mm ($0.40/sf) or 6mm ($0.80/sf) cork that sits over top of this moisture barrier. No glue. No tape. Nothing. It just sits there like a beach blanket. Then you lay the floors over top. Done and done. The vapour barrier is not only "industry standard" it is also one of the lowest cost options we have on the market. Wow. Cheap and effective. Kinda cool. Which is why many installers use it day in and day out. Cork is awesome underneath floating hardwood because the cork "floats" as well. The one thing you MUST do....make the concrete FLAT. That's the hardest part of this whole exercise....See MoreTimothy Winzell
