Comments (15)I think this style you colud get from that house without the expense of a new roof. the first thing I would be adding would be a proper entry where the front door can be moved into the new entry instead of hitting the stairs. The only windows that can have shutters would be the top ones so I might not bother . The biggest 50s item is the brick and as much as I discourage painting brick in this case if you really want to have a colonial look that brick needs to go. IMO I would embrace the house as it is except for a new entry and if it is a solid build with a good roof I would spend the money elsewhere since your budget is not huge for a renovation inside even if you do the work. I think the interior will be full of surprises like the asbestos flooring in the kitchen which for me I would cover it instead of spending a silly amount of money have it remediated. What I find when renovating 1950's housing the electrical is not adequate for todays lifestyle, the plumbing needs work and all of that needs doing before the pretty stuff can begin. Good luck with your new home and love its uniqueness would be my advice....See MoreHelp with updating exterior of 80's side hall colonial
Comments (24)I am a HUGE fan of Timberlane shutters in PA. The quality of these shutters is extraordinary. I have had them on my house now for 16 years - had them painted by my local painter, still look great. My DD got them about 3 years ago and they now offered the color she wanted in a factory paint job. The rep told me that these same shutters had been on the outside of their building in PA (harsh winters there!) now for 19 years and still looked great. One of the things they offer is copper guards that slip right on top of the shutter. Shutters tend to rot from water getting into the seams where the shutter dowels are held. This prevents that from happening. I think this is part of their success. Yes, they are expensive, but they will last for many decades with little if any maintenance required....See MoreHeLp! want to update my Brick Colonial
Comments (10)I agree on the house wanting a roofed portico. Paint the spdownspots a similar shade to the brick so they are less prominent. It is a tall house, so you want to make the beds at least 10-12’ deep to give room for 2-3 layers of plants. Plant far enough from the house so that at maturity you have room to walk behind them. Plant tags typically give a size smaller than the mature size, so look up their actual expected size on a website such as the Missouri Botanic Garden Plantfinder....See MoreFlat front Vermont colonial
Comments (13)I like the color it is too. I agree about larger lights on the front. I also think it is really lacking any landscape interest, so I might have a landscaper come and develop a plan that goes well on your style house. Its a beautiful house, just the way it is, but, landscaping will do so much for it. No green paint, and black windows are my very favorite, but, not on your house. White is so much better look for your house....See More- 3 years ago
