ebony coffee table help??

Reba

I have a 42 in square (Paula deen) coffee table that ebony in color (tobacco is the official name color I believe). It’s in great shape other than the top which from the beginning has scratched easily (hairline surface scratches). With it being so large, it really takes away from the looks of it to look this way.
I’ve tried different product to hide and disguise it but I wonder if lightly sanding and using a rub on poly would work? The top almost looks like a Formica type surface but it’s wood underneath the (lift top style) top.
I was about to replace it but thought I’d like to try and fix it first.
Does anyone have any tips on this type problem?

Thank you
