Renovations complete: new kitchen, new shower

Nothing fancy in the kitchen. We're both cooks, not chefs. Cabinets by KitchenMaid, installed by Home Depot. Quartz counters and tile backsplash.

The shower, on the other hand, is where we got creative.

That shower looks like a labor of love, as it must have been very difficult to install the tiles like that - much more ambitious than my own bathroom renovation. I love optical illusions, and the bathroom is a great place to display them.

I love your kitchen also - I think I have the exact same black refrigerator in Cathedral City, and it has a great ice maker, which is very important for that location. I also love the warm look of the wood cabinets (I'm not a fan of white cabinets at all), and the one complaint I would have is that I would want more counter space, but I do understand the limitations of small kitchens. Mine in Cathedral City is even smaller, even though the house there is exactly the same size as our house in L.A. I have to use the table in C.C. as prep space, since I have appliances covering a lot of the counters there. You have the outlets for this to happen in your kitchen as well, but perhaps you are better at storing them away than I am.

Did you get the center griddle pan for your gas range? I use mine a good deal.

The problem with a really brown shade is that it will dull down the appearance of your wood countertops. The counters read as red-gold. The highest contrast to that would be a blue green. A more yellow green would pick up the gold and be a softer contrast. A more blue tone, like a spruce or a deep blue-gray, could be very soothing. If you want to stay with warmer colors, try going for a good value contrast (i.e., light vs. dark). A reddish beige tone, for instance. All of these tones are in your backsplash tiles (I'm assuming you were showing us the mosaic, not the hidden subway tiles). The best way to choose paint is to get samples of all the different colors you think you could like, paint large patches of each on different walls, and see how they look in different lights. Daylight, shaddow, rainy light, electric light, etc. Some which look fabulous in one light look dreary in another. One, at least, should look good whenever you catch sight of it.

As far as I know I have only seen it required for thermofoil cabinets as well... I am going to venture a guess that the concern is about the 2 slide in ranges and whats over them sounding like an odd setup and how that will install.... I would be 100 percent sure about that before finalizing.... Make sure when you use the self cleaning oven feature you open the doors and drawers of the adjacent cabinets for the heat to dissipate.

Bathrooms... some I like, some not so much, but I’m not sure if/when one has made me smile before! Nice job! Kitchen looks nice. I like the idea of shooting some pool while waiting for cookies to bake or water to boil.

The kitchen does not look moved in yet. It is lovely and reminds me much of what we just did. My first priority was to have lots of counter space and also easy to maintain surfaces. I refused to install anything that couldn't be cleaned in one daily swipe of a cloth.

Small appliance build up. My kryptonite.

The appliances were sitting on the kitchen table. They're all in place now and we still have lots of clear counter space. We only leave out the stuff that's used daily - toaster, coffee gizmo, stove tools, and the mixer.

My Dad's kitchen opens to the living room and the counter with the sink has no backsplash. I'm going to save your photo to show to my husband and Dad, maybe they will take it up as a project this winter. I will need something to keep Dad from going stir crazy. Now to try and figure out how to make it his idea . . .

As for the tile, Wow! You must have had a great tiler, speaking as someone who did just some basic cuts for her last bathroom redo . . . I love creative tile patterns, and your is one of the coolest I have ever seen. Maybe the top one!

Wow, Ricky, you're far more creative than I am, my new(ish) tiled shower is just gray with a stainless steel border and my daughter told me it was "too industrial". I'll have to show her yours and see what she thinks!

I also like that long counter between your kitchen and pool table...

I have had black appliances for years. I never warmed up ( so to speak ) to cold stainless steel.

The black chair near the TV? I get it 😁

I am in Outlet Envy! I only have 3 outlets in my entire kitchen. Which makes for a lot of plug-switching. Love those countertops too.

Very nice kitchen design. Unpretentious, functional and inviting. Goes to show you can't have too many electric outlets.

Nice shower design also. Very gestalt graphic tile layout. Intriguing flip/flop "in" or "out" three D optically illusions. I would use the "out " to build a shelf support, and the "in" to build an in-wall soap holder. Just to have some fun.

But where is the floor drain? :-)

There's a plastic frame below the tile pieces. The whole thing lifts out for cleaning. Six individual pieces had to be cut and glued in place.

You did a great job. I had Home Depot do my Dekton countertops bc they had the best prices and they did a fab job. Proble due to lots of experience.llove the warmth of your cabs and yr kitchen is very inviting. I wanna cookie.

I also like your kitchen counter tops and especially the backsplash, but I wonder why the showerhead in the bathroom is so close to the wall. The hand-held shower seems to be mounted rather low also, considering how far it protrudes. Do children use this shower? That would make sense for them.

I like that the glass shower door slides rather than swings.

Lars - the handheld is low because it is not used to clean. Rather, it's used to stimulate. And yes, the glass door slides.
