There are people who say "spray fungicide" at any possible sign of fungus and there are people like me who refuse to use it. Nitrogen exacerbates fungal problems, so it's generally good to hold off on fertilizer if you suspect fungus. However you may have had nitrogen deficiency and needed some. Thank goodness you didn't use the urea! Milorganite for the most part is slow release. Try keep the grass blades dry, so if you need to water, do it early in the day so the grass can dry off before evening. If the problem looks like it's spreading and you are worried about major damage, here is some information on the kinds of fungicide least damaging to the mycorrhizae fungi: fungicides and mycorrhizae You had a soil test last year. Did it say you were low in potassium? If you were, Milorganite doesn't provide any. You could use potassium sulfate 0-0-50 to supplement the Milorganite. If the soil test did not indicate a deficiency, don't worry about it. Some general info on mycorrhizae: Mycorrhizae: so what the heck are they?

I was reading more about some methods used to help diminish gypsy moths. In addition to the fungus (species specific), there is a virus (non-species specific) that will destroy the caterpillars -- turnings them into "zombie caterpillars" and causing the infected caterpillars to "melt" (deliquesce). Fascinating (to me). The fungus was experimentally released in the late 1980s or early 1990s in CT, but it appears to also have been introduced decades earlier. That is what afflicted many of my gm caterpillars years ago. I wish I'd bagged up some of the material back then for posterity. The virus has been imported from Asia (Japan?) and although marketed, is only available to selected researchers and scientists. Here are links to interesting articles. Lisa, fun post and gorgeous blooms! (in January!) (Congratulations to Nik and all players) Sheila, I was interested in the DA own-root RMV question, too. Last spring I called their Customer Service who said they’d research the source of own-root cuttings and got back shortly to say they’re all from back home in the UK. They believed the mother plants there were grafted, but that doesn’t sound like a problem, does it, since they apparently aren’t plagued with the virus there, fortunately.
