So today a 14 year old helped me...
Comments (16)I started gardening with my parents and grandparents at a very very young age. My grandma Bayler kept an immaculate "Victory garden" of veggies and flowers in her tiny skinny lot in Avon, Pennsylvania. My grandma Cress had her kitchen garden planted out in front of the farm house in addition to all of the acres of crops raised on the farm in China Grove, NC. My parents gardened the back half acre or so of our yard. It was our garden produce that kept us fed; supplemented by ham, bacon, beef, eggs, milk, butter, peanuts, corn, potatoes, melons, and chicken from my grandma's farm. We would go to my grandma's farm on the weekends to help pull corn or pick up pecans or sucker the tomatoes or.....whatever. I never liked the big gardens growing up...too much to keep neat and I apparently have a thing about liking neatness particularly at the edges. My grandma Bayler's little yard was a jewel. My grandma Cress's farm was big production. Funny though, the voice I can still hear years and years later is the heavy German accent in my Grandpa Bayler's voice as we went out to pick cukes and squash together at my parent's garden..."now Janet, careful with your feet, you daresn't step on the wines."...See MoreI'm curious. What did/do you dislike most about your old kitchen?
Comments (85)Well, we did a mini "refresh" on our kitchen in 1999 to add a dishwasher and standard-sized range, as we had one of those apartment-sized ranges that DH detested. When we did the mini refresh, we also changed countertops, sink & faucet, and we had put in peel and stick vinyl over the hideous gold linoleum when we first moved in. That being said, we still had issues with layout, with the only really useable countertop being the 15" to left of the range and 5" to the right of it. There was a small swath of countertop across from the stove, next to the sink, but because it was right by the back door, it became a catchall. When I took anything out of the oven, it pretty much had to go on the stovetop. Baking cookies just wasn't very fun after a while. I sorta stopped doing it. :^( Then there was the wall between the kitchen and livingroom that made the kitchen seem so dark and cramped. The lack of storage was the biggest issue we had. I still get the heebs when I think of that cabinet where the plastic storage containers lived. I don't know how many times I sat on the floor and cleaned out that blasted cabinet, just to have it heave out plasticware all over me the next time I opened that door. I'm pretty sure that DH would open the door *just enough* to throw an item in there. We had no venting over the range, instead we had a cabinet directly over the range, and it was lower than standard. When we did the remodel, we could see big black burn marks underneath. Lovely. Our garbage was located across the kitchen on the stairwell landing. If I had gunk in my hands, I had the pleasure of carrying it across the floor, leaving a nice little dribble trail. Fun times! The giant fluorescent light box, with that hideous tube light. I tried to "tart it up" at one point, but in the end, it was just a big rectangle with an ugly light, so it had to go. My peel and stick vinyl tiles, so wonderful and bright when we installed them, were pitted and cracking in places. No matter how long I scrubbed on my hands and knees, there were areas where the tile was worn, and the dirt was embedded. Yuck. The kitchen wasn't awful; it just was not a joy to work in. Now I enjoy baking and cooking in there, and putting away the tupperware is not an exercise in frustration! Hooray! Oh, happy day! :^)...See MoreHelp! I’m not loving my new kitchen. Need help pulling this together,
Comments (39)I love what you've done so far! I agree that it just needs some warmth and color. We put Coretec LVP in our basement and are happy with it. I really love the Acacia pattern. It is the one I wanted, but we went with something with more greys in it (I was outvoted). But I've always loved the medium colors. Pay no attention to the price; we got ours for less than half that price through our contractor. https://coretecfloors.com/en-us/products/coretec-plus-5-plank/gold-coast-acacia-vv023-00201 Here's one that looks like bamboo: https://coretecfloors.com/en-us/products/coretec-pro-plus-enhanced-planks/kendal-bamboo-vv492-02012 This one is a bit darker but I really like this color: https://coretecfloors.com/en-us/products/coretec-pro-plus-enhanced-planks/lancaster-bamboo-vv492-02010...See More14-Year Old "Kitten" with Stage 2 Renal Failure
Comments (3)We dealt with this a few years ago. Our vet also recommnded the prescription diet which my cat hated. There is tons of info on the internet and CRF kitties including some very active posting boards. Tanya's CRF Board As I recall, there is another school of thought that more important than lower protein is lower phosporous levels in the food. Given that mine wouldn't eat the Rx diet, I went this route. I used this food chart to pin down phosporous levels, keeping it as low as possible (this chart was also a lifesaver for our other diabetic kitty) Food Chart As I recall, we kept his CRF decently under control for a couple of years. Unfortunately he also developed high blood presssure, went blind, etc. But he made it to 19! Read all you can and remember that you know your cat better than your vet. I always appreciated input but I had to make decisions based on my own experience with my cat....See Morealevrasr
