14-Year Old "Kitten" with Stage 2 Renal Failure

Hi all, my 14-year old cat, Jax, was just found to have stage 2 renal failure. Vet suggested Hills prescription diet, but I'm reluctant because of the high carbohydrate content of such diets, and also the generally low-quality ingredients that go into them (For example, $3/bag kibble was found to be using the same sourced by-product ingredients as very expensive prescription food when animals eating a variety of brands and formulas fell deathly ill due to poisons in imported ingredients). I know that renal failure requires a lower-protein diet, but... when are cats going to eat brown rice and corn in the wild? When are they going to take down a cow, for that matter?

So, my question is, does anyone have good experience with alternative diets and/or treatments, not to replace western medicine but to help? I'm trying a probiotic, fish oil and a renal support supplement. Thoughts on diet or other treatments?
