'Mme. Lambard' -- Tea Rose

This 1878 Tea Rose is one of the most-commonly-found roses in old cemeteries and 19th-century gardens around Northern California. 'Mme. Lambard'/'Mme. Lombard' is chameleon-like in her color changes, so she's got a whole collection of "study names". She can mildew a bit, but I forgive her that, because she pumps out blooms for me constantly, during the winter months.

My plant was grown from a cutting we collected in an old cemetery off CA Hwy. 49 -- The "Gold Rush" Highway.

I'm pretty sure I have two of these beauties. One was supposed to be Georgetown Tea but I thrilled with them here. It is possible they are both GT, but either way they are lovely. Yours looks so delicate, Jeri, in a delightful way.

Lovely, as always, Jeri. Thank you so much for sharing. I do wish Houzz would hurry up and reinstate the Like button for Original Posts, since I'm not always up to posting a coherent comment, but would often like to be able to respond, when someone's gone to all the trouble of posting pics of their beautiful roses, and/or sharing their thoughts.

Ingrid -- This plant of 'Mme. Lombard' was grown from a cutting collected in an old cemetery in October, 2006. That was before we had the greenhouse, so it probably spent a year in a "band," and then a 1-Gal pot, before it was moved to a 5-G pot, where it spent some time, before going into the ground around three years ago. Today, it's maybe 3 ft. tall -- Not fully mature, so more spreading than upright (and it WILL go more upright than it is, when it matures.) When you bought those honkin' bare roots you used to get from J&P and Weeks, you got a plant whose uber-vigorous Dr. Huey roots were already three years old. The scion had been growing for a couple of years, at least. When you put those in your garden, they took off like a shot. When you buy a small own-root Tea Rose, you're buying a newly-rooted plant. It's three years behind that bare root plant, in terms of root growth, and it's not depending on Doc Huey. Tea Roses take a few years to build up a twiggy structure, and mature. When we took that cutting, I was likely 62 years old. Now I'm 67, and my DH is 70, but I'm betting I'll have time to see that plant, and the others about to go into the ground, mature -- maybe 5 years or so, anyhow. That's OK. Ulp, thanks -- I'm just going to have to move Madame Lambard then. I do have another spot which will work, and it's not too late. I'm so glad I checked. I thought it might be a big one, but that's not what I was reading. You really saved me a lot of problems a year or two from now. Anyone have any ideas about Clementina Carbonieri? If it doesn't rain tonight or early tomorrow, I'll be planting in the morning. Campanula, Austins often do get bigger here in California, so I went with the larger end of the size ranges I found. If they grow a little larger yet, I'll still be okay. It isn't all of them that do this. I'm actually pleased that Cweathersby reported a larger size for Molyneaux. Two feet sounds too small, at least where these roses will be sited. Sherry, my Anna Olivier comes from a cutting from Jackie's plant, which is both huge and ancient, something like a hundred years old. I'm pretty sure it cannot be the Bermuda one. Rosefolly

Roses are amazing; I wish I had their resilience. My two Mme. Lambards are "resting" but have some buds. For me it's one of the best growers. I'm glad you have roses to brighten your day amidst all the not so good things.

What a beauty! I especially love that waterlily-like full blown bloom in the first pic. IIRC, she can be very variable in colour/appearance, or am I thinking of another of the Madames...? Sheila, out of pure curiosity, where'd your soi disant "Georgetown Tea" come from?

Apparently, some rosarians believe that the two are the same, but Cass Bernstein, who has a great eye for detail, says that they are distinct.

Jeri, my ML and GT came together from ARE in 2016. I have debated but now think they are identical. I saw the Cass remarks and photos on HMF. I replicated her experiment with one bloom from each bush. This led me to believe they were identical and ML. GT was supposed to be more cream and pink at the petal base, and ML more yellow. Mine below.

The blooms selected were small ones since I was going to pull them apart. The right and left side of the plate showed both rose's petal base and they were the same.

Of course, it's possible they are distinct and you received one rose with two different names. "Things" happen.

Kim, I think that was what Cass thought. There was a rose with a cream/pink petal base that she saw that was different than my two roses that is the real Georgetown Tea. I just don't have it. I do think I got one rose with two different labels.
