You've bought a famous garden. Now you.....
Comments (13)Funny you should mention Beatrix Farrand. I just got back from a few days in Bar Harbor ME. I visited Farrand's last house and garden, Garland Farm, which has just been bought by a group which wants to restore both. They are quite small so the project is very doable. The group is led by the wonderful landscape architect, Patrick Chasse, and is well worth any dollar or two you might spare. After years of reading about Beatrix Farrand, I do not believe she dismantled her family's place, Reef Point, garden, house and all, because she couldn't leave an endowment. It's too long a story for here but I think she felt a lot of anger about some important life experiences and that is the source of some of the curious things she did. We were told at Garland Farm that her will stated that, if her caretaking couple predeceased her, Garland Farm was to be dismantled. Fortunately, they outlived her. I am still mulling over my own answer to the question posed by this thread. Initially, I must say that I think I could never live within the bounds of someone else's vision. Much as I would be tempted, I don't think I could buy a garden which demanded restoration. Stay tuned for what someone else actually did when presented with this dilemma....See MoreNow that you've cooked a delicious meal - help me with new dishes
Comments (23)I needed additional dishes before the holidays and bought these in Nov, description said fired hotter and more resistant to breakage...sent for three 24-piece services (6 place settings x 3 for 18 place settings). The mugs at 10 oz might have been a better size if they'd been 12 oz, but I have many larger clear glass coffee mugs from a restaurant supply for those times people want a man sized cuppa coffee. They seem to fit the description (workhorses :)) although I haven't had them that many weeks, but I have to tell you I didn't pay the $208.80, or the $129.95 either. They were $69.95 per service and shipping was free. I don't know how often they are discounted that deeply. We'd moved and I had room finally for my table with all its leaves in place, much more kitchen cabinetry, and was on the hunt for several things - signed up for their email notices. These were one of the first email sale offers I received. Here is a link that might be useful: Sur la Table Bistro dinnerware...See Morehow do you know you've made the right choices??
Comments (6)"How did you handle it if the final result wasn't what you expected? Did you eventually grow to like it?" Our kitchen was done in bit and pieces, not all at once, so it was easier to tweak things over time. That said, I'm responding because I did NOT like the initial result. It wasn't quite what I was expecting. The cabinets were not as I expected them to look and it really bothered me for awhile. I had the cabinet maker add trim, change drawer fronts and do other things to get it closer to what I had been expecting. It took months. We apparently had a miscommunication somewhere up front (like he had false advertising!). It didn't cost me anything but I had to be persistant. Over time I finally got the kitchen to where I am happy with it but it took about a year. It happens sometimes. You see people on here buying one light fixture after another, or ripping out a backsplash, or repainting an island. I changed the floor! So how did I handle it? I kept working at it until I DID like the result. Good Luck and Keep Your Chin Up....See MoreUnglazed Porcelain Tile in Grey Installed and Now I do not like :(
Comments (40)Thank you for all the replies. Vinyl rugs are not something I was aware of. Good to know about them. However, they are not an inexpensive option. I am going to decorate my entire house back (put the pictures and decorations up) and see how I feel about the kitchen tiles. I did create a backup plan. I identified another tile and LVT that I like. I also found somebody who will demolish and replace my tiles for $1000. In Bay Area that is a good price. I will keep looking for a better deal and until then give the current tiles a chance. In the hindsight, I would have chosen an absolutely plain countertop so that the Grey color was something I would need to factor in the floor. Also colors go-in and out of fashion. Learned an important lesson....See MoreJoey T
